I stopped in Petland with my daughter today, (this is where I bought my pregnant Elsa so I like to stop in and see if they are still mixing sexes, which they are). Anyway, I noticed they had 3 long haired piggies who had terrible haircuts. They looked to be only a month or two old, so I don’t really see why they would have their hair cut already. They looked terrible and their coats were very dull and dry. The one poor girl had bedding stuck in her girl parts which I gently removed. I asked the guy working there why they had their hair cut and he said “that’s just the way their hair grows”. I then told him that I have 8 guinea pigs and that is not how hair grows. He insisted it was but I think they are hiding something. The hair was clearly cut with big chops in it. I’m sure no one will want them with their hair like that and the condition they are in. I felt so bad for them!
 
It's possible there was a major case of barbering going on? I used to find large (and I do mean large, to the extent I sometimes wondered if they'd been fighting) chunks of Blitzen's fur in the middle of the cage because Comet decided to barber it off. If they've been barbering it likely won't be even, and it wouldn't be the first time a long haired guinea pig became a short haired one overnight.
Not that that excuses dry, dull coats and bedding stuck in genitalia, but there's every chance the guy was telling the truth about haircuts.
 
Aw that's sad... I never go in pet shops where there might be piggies in case I want to bring them home! Were you thinking of that just a little, seeing as beautiful Rapunzel must get the best piggy hair care around...?
 
Aw, it’s so difficult when you see piggies for sale anywhere, especially when you know that they are not being looked after properly x Hope you gave them some husbandry advice, some staff are so poorly trained x
 
I REALLY wanted to take them home, but I am stretched thin with the 8 I have and it wouldn’t be fair to any of them. I was so tempted! I do have a friend that was looking for two long haired piggies and she has had guinea pigs in the past, so she could be a good home for them...
 
I know what you mean when you say you'd be stretched with anymore piggies. I have 5 as you know and although I would love at least one or two more, I have reached capacity now. I couldn't give anymore piggies the attention that they need.

Yes, it is good to know your limits. I guess mine is 8 piggies, 2 dogs, and 2 kids... oh yeah and I guess a husband too.
 
My friend took home two of the piggies yesterday! She is an experienced guinea pig owner but hasn’t had any for a few years. She has been drooling over my herd for awhile. I’m so glad she got them and I can’t wait to see their transformation! Hopefully they don’t have any major health issues, but she will take care of them well.

Her past experience and your current experience will make a good home for any guinea pigs 👍👏.

How you manage to keep 8 healthy pigs, other pets and kids, i dont know🤔😁
 
I can’t stand Petland honestly! I once when in there to “investigate” how the animals were being taken care of. I saw that they put rabbits and bunnies in the same cage which is awful because rabbits transfer deadly respiratory diseases to guinea pigs. The poor pigs looked sick and huddling scared in a corner while the gigantic bunnies hovered over them. When I told the employee, he said “They like playing with each other.” How crazy is that! Anyway, so exciting how your friend got those gorgeous gp’s! :)

I’m a very busy woman! Also, I’m a very messy woman, I am not a very good house keeper, so the time other people spend keeping a tidy house, I spend doing other things.

I don't have kids but I'm the same! Since Pedro the chin's issues started keeping the house sparkly clean is the last on the list of things to do!
Hope the piggies are loving life now away from the pet shop! :)
