Omg....I've just seen an advert on ITV advertising Pets at Home

Urgh! Just what we need, those bunch of idiots advertising their pets for sale :(

Yeah there's been one for a while mainly just advertising pet food deals or accessories i think, goes something along the lines of 'pets at home, where pets come first' I'm like yeah more like money first! :<>

Ive seen this too. If they quit with the farm bred inbred stock the idea of a nice big petshop with everything under one roof is great

Is it the one with them basically saying the pets are advising them?

It's struck a nerve with me to tbh, my college is beginning to train P@H staff so hopefully it gets better but obviously they need to follow the 'business'

it's true of the occassional staff member, i've not met any myself but I have heard stories of the rare good experience. However if it is a whole company slogan they should probably be firing a lot of their current staff and hiring people who actually care about animals. But they wouldn't want the job because you would have to work for pets at home! the two things are kind of mutually exclusive.

ok i just sat through this, grrrr

I feel so sorry for the little ginger piggy at the end, the pah advisor sat there holding it probably giving mucho incorrecto information to the poor deluded people that go to them for help...

I know they arent all the same, but most are, I'm sorry

ok just this second saw it too :(
It would be good if they ARE training staff better now and this is to promote/fund that, like 'look we have trained staff in individual areas' but we shall have to wait and see, right now, that advert reeks of 'joke' cos we all know that the majority of the time (not all but lots in my experience) this is false.

I do wonder if this is in response to the negative press they are getting about their treatment of their "stock!" grrrrrrrpow-pow

It's such a shame that they advertise like this. Tbh I'm not ashamed to say I shop there due to the convenience. Some of their stuff is ok and I know what's not (like 'treats' for guineas that contain crap) but when they give people wrong information that may actually harm a pet, that's what upsets me. If they converted the chain to supermarkets for pets, stopped selling animals and gave their staff proper training, the whole chain would be a lot more respectable.

how the hell do you know how they treat their animals? Each member of staff has to go through alot of training from which all of it is given from vets wh work with the training department and do regular checks on the breeders to make sure they stay within strict guidelines.
They do put pets before profit, they wouldnt think twice about spending money on vets bills, refusing customers who are not competent to look after a pet.

This is known by the amount of ill and pregnant guinea pigs they sell.
And also by the lack of any form of knowledge half there staff know about the pets there selling.
This opinion is based on experience and although it's generalised and I'm sure out there, that there must be some staff that have some clue what they're doing but sadly most don't which leads to bad consequences for the piggies involved.

Well...
If you would like to have a look through some of the health and illness and pregnancy threads you'll find a substantial chunk actually come out of the shop you work in...
They are not trained well at all...
If the animals welfare was their first priority they wouldn't sell them...
But being as pets at home not only sell animals but also in cages that DO NOT meet the RSPCA minimum sizes... I think it probably quite obvious...
If they "put pets before profit" they would routinely xeno all their animals before sale and quarantine them for more than 24 hours...

I do not see a need for animals to be sold in shops... It promotes sub standard care for those 'stock' animals... It does not promote responsible owner ship and alot of pet shop small animals live a pittiful existence...

I no longer touch p@h with a barge poll... I used to buy tge rabbits food from there as there was no other shop local that sold it... But I'd rather pay extorsionate postage fees then line their pockets especially as pets at home never learn from their mistakes...!

Other than that...
Hello... Welcome to the forum and I really hope you have a read through some of the pets at home stories and pick up a thing or two...

Many thanks for reading... :)

The staff are so well trained that all these posts must be a figment of our imagination then. Sorry there are not many to look at but I'm restricted to 8 links per post. I could carry on with dozens and dozens more, but I think you'll get the true picture of the forum members experiences of P@H.

I'd just like to say that I'm soon to be adopting a guinea that was originally from p@h. He contracted pneumonia and nearly died, the rescue had to nurse him and thankfully he made a full recovery apart from a head tilt. I've also had an experience where one of my guineas died after 3 months, again from pets at home. I don't hate the store as I've had many beautiful animals from there who I loved dearly, including my current piggie Clive who was in the AC but don't speak rubbish and try to tell us that they have some sort of intense training scheme because unless its in 'stacking shelves' I just can't believe you.

They sold us three piggies and said the cage was fine for them. However the cage is not even the right size for two never mind three.

Pets before profits, my arse.

Sorry, off-topic here. Have PM'd you again as no response to my PM of 3 weeks ago regarding the piggy calendar.

And the staff do not need to receive any "training" before they are allowed to sell to the public, anyone can come in and buy a pet from them as they simply want their stock sold, then in comes the next batch of animals.

They are not the shop they once were, they are even worse now

i used to work there and your right you do get the few really knowledgeble staff
i didnt know everything but i would never guess if i didnt know i would just ask
but half the time you used to get banged on the till alllllll day not ideal when you want to 'work with animals' this isnt the place to work for this
its all about sales etc
however i do thank i worked there in a way cos i do have some good knowledge but when i go into a pets at home today it is changining
i worked there 6 years ago ish
you used to have to be trained on each animal section before you could sell an animal back in the day
dont know about now though
i think it differes from shop to shop and who follows the 'rules' or not
i still go in but rarely ask advice of the staff if only for price etc
