hi everyone

I know at the minute I have 19 piggies just now, and running a boarding service, but I fell in love with 3 baby piggies all boys over a week ago, problem is I noticed when i was looking at the wee brown one, he had conjuntivitis and so did the wee tan one, the other one I like is black and I could tell it was a URI, they are staying in the pet shop for now, and all the vet gave them was the antibiotic for their eyes, and I went in today to get them and was told they all now have a URI, and are on another weeks worth of antibiotics, why are people so stupid I would have had them on eye and normal antibiotics, I want my boys at home so I can look after them, ohh so mad at the vets.

Which Pets at Home did you go to? I was at the Straiton Park one a few weeks ago and it was awful.

Would think they would be half decent since they see guineas all the time!

Sadly its a common occurrence with pets at home piggies. When you get them would be worth having your own vet check them over as having other piggies and running a boarding service it's better to be safe then sorry, maybe also quarantine them for a few weeks.

thank you guys, I have a large cage upstairs away from all other pets, once I get them i will have my vet check them, I am starting to notice that all the piggies I have lost this year were pets at home babies and were under or just over a year old, all my piggies I got elsewhere are living grand old ages of between 5 and 10 years, I have issues with the breeders pets at home are using.

piggies are now home no sign of any illness, kept them away from the others, callum is the tan baby, jerry is my black baby, and tazzles is my brown baby, and the more dominate one of the three.

I was told by my friend who works in pets at home that they get their animals from spain, that can account for the babies not being able to climatise to our conditions.

Unfortunately babies from many big pet retailers come with problems as they are not bred, transported or housed with the health and safety of the animals in mind. It is an all too frequent occurrence on here to have stories such as these. Unfortunately may of them end up with expensive vet bills and sickly piggies who often seem to die early of unknown causes. Breeders supplying these chains do so without great care for the pigs they are breeding or supplying so animals who are not of good quality are the result. It is one of the reasons that as a 'rescue friendly' forum we encourage members to obtain piggies from rescue where their health, temperament and bond can be guaranteed.

I hope your boys are feeling better. Keep any receipts from vet care from your own vet and take them back to Pets At Home. They probably won't pay up but it's worth making a fuss. The more people make a fuss the more they will be forced to make a change.

Sadly big chain stores and some small pet stores use big rodent mills and poor breeding strategy so weak animals are all too common sadly. I have had many disabled animals that have originated from pets at home orginally through some private rescue and rehoming that I do particulary involving hamsters, the most obvious ones have been missing eyes and severe neurological. Makes me so mad that they breed sickly cross breed hamsters prone to both physical and neurological issues for profit especially, all the breeding bothers me but breeding like that on purpose makes me feel sick.

I would personally definitely take them to a different vet in the future and now if anything else crops up, if you're close to any the ones on the vet locator tab are all recommened vets and all have a good record with piggies. Some general vets dont have a clue as many dont do much training on piggies as they're "exotics" x

EDIT: was writing as MerryPip did but yeah basically duplicated bumff here but I will leave it x

I got my two young guineapigs from York Pets at Home in August 2011. At the time I did not know anything about this Forum. I didn't even have a computer them.I also did not know the background of how P @ H got their guinea pigs. I had tried to get GPs from the local RSPCA but there were none available for me at the time. I did used to just get dog food from P @ H but did always look at the smaller animals and always felt sorry for them. They all looked healthy but at the back of my mind the thought was always there about what really happens to them all. So I decided to get my two. They were healthy for about two years then the friendlier one got an eye infection and although I took him to two vets I lost him. The vet was unable to explain his death even after any autopsy. Having read all the many comments on P @ H I can only assume his illness was down to his breeding background of which I knew nothing. His cage mate is still with me and touch wood he is still healthy. I now have a total of 4 guinea pigs. 3 of which are rescue guinea pigs. I will never forget the guinea pig I lost as he was such a character but his legacy he left is that I will always try to give a GP a decent home as long as I .am able. If I hadn't got him from P @ H I would not have reignited my love for guineapigs

hey guys, thanx for the replies, thankfully the boys were kept in the store and the pets at home staff paid for all their treatments, I normally adopt my piggies, but I was in the store when I saw the little ones, my piggie in the profile is alvin, I brought him from pets at home with his brother harry, fingers crossed they are a picture of health.

I lost Lockie last christmas after he suffered a heart attach, pets at home piggie, he was 14 weeks when he died, I now have his two brothers who are a year old, rocky who is healthy, and auggie who is blind, he was fine till about 2 weeks ago, Mj who died aged 2 of heart failure, again pets at home piggie, Salt who was 14 weeks, he never gained weight and was only 242g when he died, pepper who was 7 months died of heart failure, pets at home piggies, and I just lost my year old piggie at the beginning of this month to brain lesions, which caused continuous strokes, he was put up for adoption due to no one wanting him, he was so adorable, pets at home piggie, since christmas last year I have lost 8 piggies, some not pets at home piggies, 3 died of old age, the rest were wee babies and were pets at home babies, I have 13 babies from pets at home and I am worried I will not see them grow. 9 adults that only 3 is pets at home piggies, all the rest are not from the store, Mica 6, Seth 9, Toby 3, Tod 2, wally 1, Gizzie and Charlie 1, Sammy 2, Spike 2. these are the only ones i know are fine.
