Hi all, bought some hay about 2 weeks ago from pets at home, i put my hands in to get the hay out every time i put it in the cage and every time i feel small pricks on my hand, take my hand out and theres small dried out thorny things stuck in me :S They could hurt them if they got stuck in their mouths, i do not want to give it to my boys anymore!

Take it back and complain.

I buy my hay in bales, it's much cheaper and is great quality. If you know anybody who keeps horses they'll be able to sell you a bale. Otherwise try a petshop who sells it in large bags packed by hand.

This happened to me too with a bale for P@H. I was looking after a friends rabbit and she had given me the P@H hay to feed the bun. I found several large thorny brances in among the hay. My nearest store is too far away for me to get to so I couldnt return it, but if you can get back to them then you should. I cut my hand on the thorns, so goodness know what this could have done to the bunny and piggies.

It's probably brambles that have got caught in the machines from hedgerows around the field. You'll probably get the reply that it's a natural product and things like that can't be avoided but still think it's worth letting them know.

Pets at home is like the worst place ever... I dont have the receipt so i dobut they will accept returns. Going to gte some better hay instead :)

just take it back...I took a large bale of hay back to the shop without a reciept....not a problem.

exact same thing happened to me two days ago, pulled out a massive brown thorn branch! when looking at the consistency of the hay though it looks different from before, i hope they havent changed the type of hay they are selling!

It will be branded so they know it's their's. Should be no problem with getting refund. You could spend it on something other than hay.

Emmy, if you are close to the M62. Just off Junction 8 (Ikea/M & S) Warrington. There is a fab place where I get the most gorgeous real hay for £1.30 for a great big bag. Freshly bagged from the bale. xx

...and they sell sacks of carrots for £1.40

oh thats not good at all:(

I went looking in town today and found a farm/pet shop that sell a 2kg huge bag of meadow hay for under £2@) is that normal?

i get my hay from pet planet online there hay is usually very good but the last order i had there was thorns and black weeds in it and it dident smell very fresh i phoned them and complained i had to send them a photo via email and they replaced it for me

I had the misfortune of getting one in my thumb this morning using the remainder of my P@H hay. :x

I am furious because they could have got that stuck in their tongue or throat. :(

Good job I bought some bags of it at the farm shop yesterday.

unfortunately bad batches of hay are common enough - just this month i've had to return mouldy hay, and my dog found half a surprisingly fresh mouse in another.
