Recently, I bought a lonely baby guinea whom i was hoping to introduce a friend to.
HOWEVER, he seemed to have dry skin on his ear, and a little injured eye and a poor sniffle.
Hoping it was dry skin, and an allergy I tried vaseline and changing the beddings ect.
Cutting a long story short, I visited the vet today and the summary is as follows.

Possible upper infection resulting in antibiotics to be given.
(In which I'm struggling to get poor Punky to take with the syringe! Any tips would be greatly helpful, even trying to keep his little mouth open if he wont take it is hard enough!)

Ringworm on his ear.
(Cream is easily appliable thankfully!)

Luckily his eye is healing!

Now this is 2/3 weeks on from buying him, recon i can get any justification from pets at home? Or am I going to be ignored?
I'd like to hear anybody about their opinion on this.

Hi there!

Sorry to hear of your troubles :(

I'm a noob here and I got my last 2 piggies from P@H and never had any issues, i'm hoping that these two new chaps are aOK too... BUT... in the event they aren't, the lady told me that I could take them back at any time in the next couple of months if i had any issues or just needed advice etc.

It might definately be worth making a complaint.. or something! :)

I'm sorry he's unwell. There will be plenty of people here to offer advice if you need any more help.

I would definately contact the store and ask to speak to the manager. Most animals only come with a 48-hour guarantee or something ridiculous like that, but they may offer you some form of compensation as a good will gesture.

It might also be worth contacting the head office via the website about your concerns. Sadly URIs and ringworm are both highly contagious so it's likely that all of the other pigs for sale will have the same problems too.

hi i think you should go back to the store and they SHOULD pay your vet bills.

i had the same problem with my piggies one had ringworm and david had a breathing issue (which is ongoing) and also an eye infection which came back twice. I took 3 vet bills to pets at home and was refunded for them all.

just to let you know as well i treated the ringworn with cannestan cream and the vet was happy for me to do this and it did clear the problem x

if you have trouble feeding the poor little piggy with the syringe do what i do to check my piggys teeth (well Juarez anyway, Blaster struggles sometimes). Let them lie on your chest the put your hands on their head and pull back a little they should have their back legs on your chest and the front legs should be in the air. PM me if you need any more help.

Take your vets bill back to p@h, They will give you a refund. I know its happened to me 3 times! I hope your piggy recovers quickly :)

P@H should have pay the bills back but for future I WOULD advise to rehome a piggy as they are usually health checked before being given away. I got my Goofy from p@h and was lucky with no problms but currently I am waiting a adopt pair of sows. NO MORE BUYING FOR ME! ONLY RESCUING.

I hope Punky will get well soon.

Thanks everyone! :)
I was intent on rehoming when I went, but I fell in love with him as soon as I saw him. Probably because he was a bit special!

Anyway, luckily Punky is coming to terms with his medicine, (bribery with cucumber, and gentle encouragement does the job!). I'm also pleased to say both seem to be working, he's got a check up Friday to evaluate his progress so i'll let you all know how it goes!
Hopefully I'll be able to begin searching for a lovely friend! :)

As for the p@h situation though, I basically got ignored.
I explained my situation, and due to time being so long, they basically said it could have been developed after I had him. (I really doubt that however)
So that left me feeling a bit foul. Especially considering it's a main supplier of the things I need for Punky. :(

But chin up, he's getting better, and that's all i'm focusing on now. ^-^

I bought my Tallulah from P@H today and she has a possible URI... Shes booked into the vets. I just felt so sorry for her all by herself and looking unwell... the ones in the other cages seems a lot bigger than her.

I'm just so glad that I have her at home now and that she isnt instore anymore

i bought Lottie from PAH a few months ago - they told me at the time they had a contract with a local vets so i could take her to the vet for free within the first week and have her checked plus they would pay for any treatment within the first week. A weeks not long but i was impressed with this. Not all PAH offer this but i am hoping our local one does. I was in Yeovil that day!(not the local store!)

rolleyes

I wish people wouldn't buy from P@H - surely their reputation is well known by now... rolleyes

I got my old boys and my new boys from P@H, I hadn't heard of this "reputation" before finding this forum, much like I didn't realise quite how many piggies there were needing rehoming.

They did get the sexing of my rabbits wrong 5yrs ago, but then so did the breeder my friend got her lionheads from lol.

Saying that, my store has always seemed to have animals that look healthy, always have food, water and hay and are always in spotless cages, and they totally grilled me before allowing me to buy my boys. Now I know more, in the future I'd rehome, but like I said, clueless before I came here ?/

Every store i thinks diffrent, its a shame that in this case the staff at that particular stoe dont have any empathy to you or your pet witch suggest they dont care as much as they should working with animals. My p@h store everyone is very friendly and everytime i visit they ask how my piggys are doing even though i never bought them they were rescued and like and chat and stuff and when i resuced Revel from there section they gave him a once over in front of me and said his nails could should be trimbed as soon as because they couldent because he was only there for three day befor i got him and had to have time to settle in, thats just my opinion and i would write to there head office or superier*( rubbish speller) and say your concerns, i wouldnt be to happy either xx all the best hope piggy gets better soon big hugs x ash , lola , bella and Revers xx

Yeah i have had nothing but problems with them aswell i bought a female form there got her home and she was lonely so i went the following day and there next batch of guinea pigs had arrived from the breeders i slowly introduced them.3 weeks later george was looking rather fat on his behind being a new guinea pig owner and having 2 rats die of a tumar (also bought from pets at home) i panicked and went to the vets she was pregant she had 3 pups my other guinea pig also gave birth a few weeks after.I rang pets at home and got a really snotty assistant manager.Annoyed as i was i sent a very nasty email to the link on the website telling them how i have shopped with them for years and how they mis sexed both of my dwarf hamsters etc and now sold me not 1 but 2 pregnant guniea pigs.
I did however get a phone call 2 days later from the very helpfull manager who gave me a free cage carefresh nuggets cage cleaner etc and a book on guinea pigs and di apoligise like crazy.i think this was the local breeders fault and isnt a nationwide thing. But Psssst if you want a free cage this is the way to do it lol most of them dont even check receipts or anything

i hope the guinea gets better soon

I have "rescued" from a breeder who used to surply P@H with babies. I'm not surprised that these piggies had problems. The breeder I delt with had poor conditions. Out side with snow on top of cages. No hutch huggers, just a sun umbrella to keep worst off. Water bottles has cut off socks on to help stop freezing. Several piggies to one cage. Mixed sex. Piggies were "churned out" on a rota system. She was proud that she received £6.00 per baby.
I'm not saying that every P@h breeder is like this. I have a piggy my self from P@h and he is 4 years old.
I have also rescued from a P@H employee who had to move giving up her animals. The animlas themselves were in good condition, but the accomdation was below avarage. Too small, for the animals by my judgement.

Anybody else feel even though they've bought the pigs from P@H, they're rescuing them somewhat?

Although, as i've said before I'd have rather adopted, I still feel as though I'm glad to have bought him, and can care for him. Whereas if he were bought for a child, he may have become more seriously ill, or just gotten worse in store.
As soon as my piggy is healthy though, I'm definatly looking to adopt another. :D
