I popped into my local shop this morning with the kids to pick up another cuddly bed for Scruff.

We were looking at all the piggies in the pens when a couple approached a member of staff and said they were looking for guinea pigs and could they have a look at the white ones - there were 2.

The staff member picked up the fluffy white one and went to hand it the lady - she instantly cringed and said "I'm not sure I want - don't they bite?"..........Well, my hackles were raised instantly then. I am afraid if I were the staff member, I'f have said well you can't buy one then grrrr!

Well, she eventually took the poor piggie and cuddled it. The staff member went to take the other white one out and when it was lifted up the lady said "Nah, don't want that one.".......:)>>> Like it was a piece of ruddy furniture or something... Well, I was puce with rage by this time...

My 11 year old daughter said to me "Mum, let's go before one of us says something we regret."! We left quickly so don't know if this couple ended up with a piggy or not but I sincerely hope not.....poor piggies....

why do people buy animals if they know nothing about them?! also your daughter sounds sensible to say that. one thing i learnt on this site is that people love their pigs asmuch as i love mine so i expect you were fuming.. i hope they didnt get it x

Aw I can imagine how you felt! I think the problem is, that once you become a piggy lover, anything anyone else does who isn't one, instantly feels as though they are not caring enough.
I bought my last piggy from a fairly local woman who breeds them for her shop (as I wanted a baby and there were no rescue babies around at the time) but she was also a vet nurse which is why I chose her to buy them from.
I was mortified when I saw where they were kept i.e. in a caravan with a pet shops worth of other animals (rabbits kept in dark tiny hutches) and the piggies were all in a little sawdust open run with no hidy holes, green algae water bottles, only carrots to eat and about 6 heavily pregnant females in a corner looking thoroughly miserable. I left with a gorgeous piggy but cried when I got in the car as I wanted to have a go at her and ask how she could not even clean their water bottle! Hubby said it's best we can care for one than none of them. They did, however, all look clean and well and my piggy has never had any need to go to the vets (except a check up) which is more than I can say for the ones I originally got from PAH! lol.

Oh, just to add to ignorance of people - my friends remaining piggy died and she posted it on FB as she was upset and her MUM, wrote 'well it was only a rat!' . I was fuming and wanted to have a go at her but obviously couldn't :(

Some people! Unfortunately, we all know that P@H don't care who they sell those poor animals to, as long as they sell them. I can see why your annoyed, some people are just stupid and don't think. It makes you wonder why they want the animals in the first place if that is their reaction.

I was in our local store a while ago and there was a couple with a child and they were trying to decide whether to get a rabbit or guinea pig. I heard the mum say "I'd prefer a guinea pig to a rabbit, as you don't get vets bills with guinea pigs". At that point I walked off to save a public slanging match, but by the time I'd got the bits I went in for they were on their way to the check out - with guinea pigs. The sales assistant really should have said something to them, but at the end of the day they got their sale.
