pets@home on the isle of wight is a good store,it animals are well look after!!i brought two guinea pigs of them and theyve turned to be tame pets

Louise which garden centre on the Wirral did you go to? We rescued one of our bunnies from Waterworld near Neston.. he was being kept in a tiny g.pig cage when he is actually a large rabbit. was it there?

Hi Katie,

Sadly it was. We went over as we were going to get another boar but found there pigs seemed quite agressive, we have now decided to leave that idea. I just felt so sad for the bunnies more than anything as one had matted hair. I found the store quite reasonable for hutches and cages (I was after a large cage for the boys for the winter but have decided on a hutch hugger instead). At the time when I went they only had boars and no sows, even the birds didn't look properley cared for. But sometimes I think is it me? Am I being too picky?

Where you from Katie? I'm in Naylorsfield near Huyton, Liverpool.

Take care,

Louise

Hi Louise,
I'm originally from Birkenhead, lived in Greasby and Neston on the Wirral, now in N.Wales.
I was shocked at the state of the bunnies they had in Waterworld - the little cute dwarves and lops were all running round in a pen surrounded by hoardes of screaming kids, and the big magpie buns were in small cages at the back. Marble had an upset tum, a crusty eye, and couldn't even sit up properly in his cage. I opened it and put my hand in to stroke him and he put hi head out for more strokes, but he seemed really depressed. We couldn't leave him so we brought him home with us where he has a nice big hutch and run, we let him out in the garden on the weekends, and he is a very laid back funny rabbit!

I think Waterworld is worse than P@H!

they told that i should keep them on nuggets until at least a month because that what they were given when they were in the store.......they also told how to look after them and ask me if i had any questions about them

obviously i can only speak from my experience - bought a piggie - dead in 24hrs, replacement dead within a week. and asbo had a cold too 30 pounds worth of vets bills

piggies mixed with buns in pens on woodshvings - knowledge of staff - non existent - average age of staff 12. i'm not only moaning about how the animals are kept in store but about misleading advice printed on products and leaflets. again i point out for ppl without the net or those who have not been on tgpf then this advice could be fatal

Katie,

That's really sad. I found the staff to be a bit hopeless too, I asked for a hay rack for a hutch and I was offered a plastic one!

Glad to hear your rabbit is ok now, sounds like he is doing well now which is the main thing! I still say I'd rather get the animal out of horrible situations like that, they need are help too. :)

Take care,

Louise

P@H in Stockport houses rabbits and guinea pigs together, it is terrible, the staff are thick and don't know what they are talking about. I have bought a hamster in the past from there and it died shortly after purchasing it.

It is strange how all of a sudden they have stopped selling budgies, they should be stopped from selling animals altogether in my opinion and concentrate on supplies.

I know, it was like they couldn't be bothered, just wanted to serve as many people as poss and make most sales.
I would always prefer a rescue animal but we just couldn't have left him there, and I know its silly and emotional and in the long run just makes the problem worse by encouraging petshops, but I would have cried all the way home if we hadn't taken him! (silly moo!)

I thought the same about budgies, my p@h store is pretty good, 4 pens for separated buns and pigs, males and females, signs saying not to have them together and good advice in general but i understand that not all p@h stores are the same x

Our p@h store is definitly improving, i was pleased to see when it was hot weater all the buns and piggies had fans lots of water and hay racks :)

On the other hand we have a garden centre near us that sells pets in shocking states, they are cramped into tiny cages/pens and i just cant go in there it really does upset me :(

Yes that impressed me too, they had bottles of frozen water in the pens and the pigs were licking the condensation off them to keep cool, i thought that was a good idea x

If you're going to complain to/about P@H can I suggest that you also complain to/copy in the RSPCA HQ. I know there are a few anti RSPCA people around but just trust me on this one, it might do some good.

That's how I felt with Sunshine, he was in with an albino bunny and I thought I've got to have him, we only went in to look as we didn't have the hutch but I got a large cage from Wilkos and took him home. The woman at the pet shop said I could introduce a bunny :-O

So if we want to report a pet shop we do it through the RSPCA? I've only reported through trading standards in the past.

I agree I have had a few bad experiences from buying at pets at home, like I bought my 2 first rodents from p@h (2 dwarf hamsters) they told me they were both girls!
But one day I found 3 new members of the family (three babies!)
I was so annoyed because I was new to the experience of owning rodents and I didn't know what to do with them!

Also I think it's discusting th they have rabbits and piggies in the same pen >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Definitely go through trading standards, if you're going to do a petition or any letters just copy the RSPCA in. I'm not suggesting you waste their time by calling them out to cases where they can't do anything, just keep them informed/lobbied about public feeling.

p@h are pretty strange they tell you in there general care leaflets to no house rabits and cavys toghether (wich is perfectly right) but they do it them selfs i informed them and they paid no attention to me what so ever
Generaly i like some of the products from p@h but the way they say they need stuff (i.e. Vitamin suplements in their water, when this stuff is hated by pretty much all cavys making them not like water, NOT GOOD!) they sould star careing about the buyers and more importantly the animals they are affecting :tickedoff:

Welcome to the forum is your local p@h the cannock branch?

>:( i agree about the exercise balls !! they still sell them :(

they have seperated the rabbits away from the piggies and have an adoption centre but the ball thing needs to be banned !

i agree a petition is in order ! O0

I got my piggies from Pets @ Home. They keep the females and males separately as well as in separate areas to the bunnies. The girl who helped me was very helpful. They also have an adoption section for unwanted pets - although they have rabbits in this area and it is an extremely small area with not much room to move in. :(

well i went in the mansfield branch today,, guinea pigs have now been seperated from the rabbits and have a larger encloser.. my guineas seem a lot shyer than the ones in P@H. i wanted to buy some but marc said a definate NO!
