I know people dont like buying from petshops. But i spotted an abyssinian gpig earlier whilst out buying gerbil food in brunos northampton. Hes an adult. A big pig at that. It sais on the notice that he must be kept alone for some reason. Hes gorgeouse and sat in a small cage. Hes been there for ages. I see him about 4 months ago.
I would love to see him in a good home, looks very healthy and tame. I see it as rescuing him. The pet shop is a bit of a crap hole.

I dont mean to advertise. But i feel sorry for the little guy. I bet hes had a bad time bonding and has been seen as viscous

I used to live in Northampton and I definitely agree with your description of that particular shop, I dont know anyone with a good opinion on it.. often people have absolutely no idea the intricacies of bonding, so a pig will be labelled a loner purely for displaying perfectly normal dominance behaviours. I'd ask a little more about him, why he needs to be kept alone just to rule out him carrying a health issue that might harm other piggies. Ultimately it's your choice but I'm a sucker for a sad looking petstore piggy even against my own advice of voting with your feet and not supporting these places. You've done well to not get him in the 4 months since seeing him, I think 2 weeks was the longest I waited to go back and get one.

I definitly wont get him. No room or time lol, But hes a stunner.i buy food from brunos but rarely. They are expensive, it was just convenient today. Are you talking about brunos near billing aquadrome?

Bless him, I hope he finds a nice home!
Yeah thats the one, my ex did work experience there while we were at college yeeears ago, I went in on my day off..nearly bought a mouse that they let me give a cuddle lol

I had mice before, when i was young. ended up swapping them with a lady for 2 huge rats, then decided i didnt have time and gave the rats back. I could never do that now

Went in that petshop sunday to look at cages. That pig is still there. I asked some info on him this time lol. But i resisted. Funnily enough the sign he had saying must live alone has now been removed and changed to friendly loving male guinea pig hes called tom. Hes caged alone still but now in a huge run .but you can see him wanting to get to the herd next door

one of the guinea pigs i have now came from a pet store, she looked terrible and the pet lover in me couldn't resist. it's up to you but for me, i'd take him home and find someone else to take him in because of your space issue. i don't like the idea of pet stores selling animals, but, if you really feel like you need to do something, i'd do it.

i cant bring him home, i wont be able to let go of him. He looks in very good condition

I know if i get him, il be stuck with him in a nice way. He needs a herd anyway. The biggest problem would be i cant afford to take on another pig for vet bills. And I'm in the process of bonding my 2
Was not a criticism on you.
I love to take him and I'd walk all the way there to make a piggie happy but my personal circumstances and i have 5 girls it's impossible at the moment. I hope through you bringing this to attention will help him. what about a local rescue could they help 're home .

Sorry for the late reply . I didnt take it as criticism no worries. I was talking myself out of getting him lol

Hey anyone who has read this thread. Would it be wrong of me to buy this pig at the weekend and give him to a rescue as its taking space that a seriously sick pig in need might want.

If you see him you would know what i mean hes a sand and white fluffy abyssinian boar and hes massive lol

Actually scrap this idea it is wrong :mal::td:

If you get this pig then he’s your responsibility I’m afraid. I wouldn’t advise getting him & then planning to surrender him to a rescue.
Rescues are overstretched with genuine cases of neglect and this time of year there’s an epidemic of chucking out the piggies we got over the summer because it’s cokd/dark/the kids lost interest. Any good rescue is probably full unless it’s a genuine life or death situation.
Buying piggies goes against the whole ethos of rescue. By buying you perpetuate the intentional breeding cycle.
If you want him for yourself then get him. If you don’t then leave him where he is.

Yea I'm leaving him. I said in my comment that it would take up valuable space. It is hard though when you see an adult guinea pig that will likely go to a rubbish home and you know you know enough to give him.a good life

I know what you mean @Skypipdot I have room for 3 more piggies but don't have the funds or the time to spend with them. I only wish I had. I was on Gumtree the other day looking for something else and I may have "accidentally"(!) looked at Guinea pigs. I could see a lot of them in unsatisfactory conditions but had to turn away and leave them and remind myself not to look at them again.

Yea i saw this pig I'm talking about whilst out looking for a bigger cage, i see him before this when looking for hay. I'm not going back there any time soon. They keep rabbits with guinea pigs

Oh, that’s so bad! Surely the pet shop knows not to keep Rabbits and Guinea Pigs together? The pet trade stinks!

Ive left a bad review on google maps but they keep doing it. Its a very 1990's old skool ways shop
Out of curiosity can I ask if this is a shop that has a branch in Kingsthorpe? My sister used to live in Northampton and there was a pet shop near her that she occasionally used to get stuff for her cats from and I once went in...very old-fashioned cages etc and I didn't like it at all.
