We have three petshops close to where I live, none of them having a very good selection on things for little animals, despite two of the shops selling small animals. (and surprisingly, the one shop that does not sell animals is the one most willing to order new things in for me!)

Now it has always been a dream of mine to be self employed and run my own shop. Obviously this is far far in the future yet as I need to put lotsa money into my piggybank first, but still. I think most petshop owners arent fanatic about the animals they sell, which is why they do not know about all the different houses and treats and feeds available, so I think that a shop actually stocking a variety of grassy hutches, treats from pampered piggies, gorgeous guines stuff, cuddle cups, and actual GUINEA sized houses (cmon, most houses sold as piggy houses only fit newborn ones!) would have a big advantage over the other ordinary shops.

Big problem: Shops that do not sell live animals are unattractive to customers. Even my husband says he prefers the shops where he can go and have a look at animals (a bit like a miniature zoo free of entry charge I suppose), to the ones that just stock food and housing. Now we had a talk about this yesterday and I wondered if I actually came up with a good idea here.

If a shop was to foster rescue piggies (RSPCA etc), and have them "on display" so to say, customers could have a look at the animals while they are shopping just like in any other shop. However there would be no impulse buying as a person being interested in an animal would have to go through the normal rescue procedures of homecheck etc.

The rescue piggies would probably have a better chance of being rehomed to a nice home as people are more likely to wander into a petshop and fall in love with a piggy than browsing through websites to find a suitable addition to their tribe.

What do you think? And do you think most rescues would be willing to put their animals into a fosterhome that is a petshop?

rescue piggies and petshops

it is a good idea of yours, but am not sure if rescues would go for it with the stress it adds to the piggy and the fact the piggy hasn't got a stable home environment.
i would say before you go into this perhaps run it pass some of the rescues near you.
they may allow you to have pictures of the guinea pigs and bunnies needing a home on a notice board or something similar.
but i think and this is just my opinion, if you sell everything a piggy or bunny owner needs for their beloved pet you would get serious buyers in your shop no worries!
my dream was to always have a petshop too but mine was to have a vet surgery connected to the shop and to also have an animal chemist for medications. the vet practise would be open 24 hours 7 days a week and have at least 3 vets so not everyone did night shift or weekends.
but mine is just a pipe dream, but hoping your dream gets fulfilled! good luck and many hugs XXXXX keep us posted how it goes!

Mine is also just a dream so far, its going to be many years before I will even be able to think about putting this into practice. :)

About not having a stable home - I dont see how the piggies being in the shop until some home is found is any different from piggies being at a private foster home until they are rehomed? Care to elaborate? :)

Just thought I would find out what people thought, thats all.

piggy home

i just meant being in a petshop they would have people coming in and looking at them, kids yelling and screaming, perhaps being taken home at night with you and on weekends.
where as being in a foster home they are being looked after, loved, cared for like you would any pet so when it is time to go to forever home it is less of a transition for piggies.
it is hard to explain, i am NOT saying if you had piggies in your shop you wouldn't care for them! i just mean all the people coming in, the noise, hustle and bustle going on. hoping i have explained my self better sorry for any misunderstandings.! i still think it is a great idea!

pets at home aleady do this, they have a selection in the shop that are looking to be adopted, all you do is make adontion to the charity.
i phoned them yetaerday to get a friend for freddy but theve only got rabbis at the moment :(

Usually with the Pets at Home ones it is animals they cannot sell or animals that have been returned for being aggressive. I have an adopted guinea pig from Pets at Home Pudsey is supposdly allergic to woodshavings. he did sneeze a hell of a lot when I got him but he is fine now his bedding is fleece.

I think it is a good idea. I know the lady who I get my supplies off she no longer sells animals because of the upkeep and having to see to them when shop is closed and if they are ill. Most pet shops just see the turn over in a product including the animals. That's not to say some won't do it. Some shops are fab, I'm lucky to have 2 in my area that I would imagine would do this.

I think in theory it sounds like a good idea, but I think it would be unfair on the animals. As people have said you get people coming in and out of shops, and not all of them are savoury. Small children tap the cages and whinge at the animals to get up and run around. They also might get bitten by the smaller, more nervous creatures.

What you could do is maybe have your own, friendly animals on a rotation basis - that way when people come into the shop they can still have a wee look, and you can also educate people more about the animals needs. I have to agree - if your a well stocked shop, you'll get owners coming in anyway! I've found that most small pet shops that don't stock small animals tend to be mostly focused on dogs and cats. Ones with livestock have more small animals toys because of people "buying the whole package." when they purchase a pet. :(

Good luck with your future ideas though! There's lots of things you could do to intice people in, animal nights, grooming parlours, puppy parties...

I think in an ideal world it would be great, but there is many problems, the main ones being people comming in and out of shops, the guinea pigs would need virtually a no stress environment, could be alot of moving for them from one place to another, then of course theres the home checks.

What about just advertising what rescue piggies your local rescue has got, ie, printed leaflets about each piggie and the rescue they are in? Not many petshops do this and I think it would be a good idea.

I like this idea. No stress for the animals yet they still get "promoted".

I always thought about having a Pet shop/rescue,where there are photos of all the animals in the area that need rehoming. This would be good advertising for the rescue/rehome places, also educated those who are unware of rescue places! People would get the proper information for their new pet!Could sell second hand hutches and equipment!

yeah I agree with the idea of having maybe an 'adoption wall' where people can look at pics of the animals and read about their backgrounds
I think a rescue wouldn't agree to having animals in the shop as like someone else said its too loud and possibly stressful for them
