My daughter has just brought Midge (4) back from the vets. She is passing blood, we started her on baytril wednesday evening and booked her in for a check-up today. As we thought she is suffering from a uti but also producing milk from one of her nipples. The vet has diagnosed a phantom pregnancy. Does any-one have any information/ advice concerning this condition in pigs. Thanks.

No he didnt, we have to monitor her for about a week then take her back if anything else crops up or there's no improvement

Betty bun is going through a phantom pregnancy at the moment. She's plucked a load of fur from her chest and has made a nest. If you go anywhere near her "babies" she pounces on your hand! She's not pregnant and has never been near a buck, let alone mated! :)

I have never heard of a psuedo pregnancy in a guinea pig. I'm assuming they can happen in piggies but i have never heard of it. If she is passing blood from her gential area, it will either be a UTI, or a uterine infection (or possibly a vaginal infection but i doubt so) i would assume. I would get more of a comprehensive diagnoses if she doesnt make an improvement, and i would keep a very close eye on her. Uterine infections can be quite nasty if not treated with strong antibiotics, and in some cases spaying in the only and best opition. Not trying to scare you... just putting my thoughts forward. Has your piggie ever had pups before? and is there any chance of her being in with an uncastrated boar recently?

I would suggest if you have no improvement in the next few days, get more of a diagnosis to rule out uterine (and ovarian) problems. By maybe at least a conscious xray, and/or an ultrasound.

She's still spotting blood, I dont think it's a uti as there's no blood or squeaking when she's peeing. She's back to the vets on wednesday to discuss the options. I've a feeling it's going to be cystic ovaries, her symptoms are very similar to Sherbet & Lily ( both had cystic ovaries).

I took Midge for a check-up, there was a slight improvement with the spotting but her abdomen is more swollen and the vet can feel a definate swelling on her right side so she's going in tomorrow for a spay. Going to be a very stressful day.
