Over the past couple of weeks Phantom has been losing weight. Initially just a little, and then in the past few days a very significant weight loss. Although she didn't seem ill, I thought it best to get her checked over as the weight loss was rather worrying. I got her a vet appointment for this evening.

Simon checked her over thoroughly and immediately found a urethral stone. Although it was clearly very uncomfortable for Phantom he was able to remove it within a couple of minutes. I was amazed at the size of it, although Simon did say that they are usually around that size, but many are more difficult to remove.

We are now hoping that that was the cause of her weight loss and that now she is feeling more comfortable she will regain weight and condition.

Here's the stone. The picture quality is poor as it was taken on my phone.

We are just hoping that there aren't any further stones, although Simon couldn't detect any more and he's pretty good at picking up on them. She seems fine now and has been munching away non stop since we got home. I'm so glad she didn't need an anaesthetic to remove it.

Ouch, bless her! That must of been very painful and must have caused alot of discomfort so may have been the reason. You will just need to now monitor her weight and how much she eats.

Hope she feels better soon and has a speedy recovery x

Owww. Did Simon make an incision to ease it out? A good job done anyway. Let's hope she feels much better now.

OMG Debbie! That's gotta've been sooo uncomfortable for her :(
I'm really glad he could ease it out without GA or having to cut her :)

No he was able to manipuluate it out without any need for incision thank goodness. When we came out a lady in the waiting room asked if it had sounded a lot worse than it really was. Phantom had really cried out when he was removing it. She was very shocked when I shown her the stone.

Poor Phantom! Glad she is on the mend. Sending healing wheeks from me and my gang..

Just catching up with this thread - I'm so glad for you and Phantom!

It was quite big. I need to xray the pig to see if there are any other bits and pieces. Unfortunately, the stone was too big to be manipulated out of the end of the urethra so it had to be taken out via an opening.
I think she may have other problems, there has been a slight weight loss.

I really hope she'll be ok. I guess we were lucky with Phantom in that it could be manipulated out, but then I guess there are no guarantees we are completely out of the woods just yet. I'll be keeping a very close eye on her over the next few days.

I took another film, it doesn't reveal anything untoward. I shall remove her from her companion for a few hours so she can eat at her own speed, without having her share of the food being eaten by her dominant companion.

Good news that you couldn't see anything sinister.

I took Phantom out twice today to eat away from the rest of her cagemates. She munched her way through a whole pile of veg on both occasions.

Hope Phantom is feeling better now, must of been so painful having to extract like that, poor girl. Better out than in though. It does make you wonder why this seems to be a common problem with so many guineas. Could it be the dried foods that are to blame, it is such a mystery.
