My pigs seem to go through some phases. Like they both used to love collard greens, now they won't eat them. Then they love kale, now they aren't eating it as much. They both love romaine as always, cucumber and carrots but these other vegetables they love them then they decide they won't eat them. What does this mean? Do you have anything with your pigs like this?

Also, my pig Shura is a messy eater. When he eats lettuce or any green his mouth turns green because of all the saliva. Does this happen to you ever?

Thank you for your help

Hiya,

My pigs used to be fussy but I put my foot down. The girls didn't like cucumber and the boys do so I buy it, I kept giving it and they soon realised there was nothing else coming so they ate it! I dont' have a problem with them leaving food now.

As for the Saliva no my pigs aren't like that it could be a tooth problem. Having teeth problems can cause a lot of saliva, I don't know too much about it so hopefully someone who does can help with that.

My piggies go through fazes. Last week I had Ringo and Star for the week and my mum said they wont eat brocolli or kale but they loved it here cheeky little things. 2 of my piggies wont eat corn on the cob but all the rest love it fussy little things!

Yeah,my pigs have food strikes as well.

I agree that they COULD be a dental problem,or possibly a blocked salivary gland.Best have a gp savvy vet have a look at the mouth.

Thank you. Well he does have almost like a marble thing on the left side of his neck sort of. But my neighbor's a doctor and said it was a sist and that it could go away. But of course that I should keep an eye on it. He's been himself, energetic, excited everymorning, eating a lot. When your pigs eat do they ever get messy mouths? He's been to the vet and they said he has a lot of saliva but there's no tooth problem. But for his next appointment I'll keep it in mind, and of course if I need totake him before I will.

What foods can be fed everyday? What foods should be limited?

Thank you
Ksiusha

The only piggy I have that gets wet and "green" round the mouth and under the chin, has an ongoing dental problem(an unusual and rather complicated one).

The only foods that should be given every day are hay, dried grass and dry mix.All veggies should be varied as much as possible.,and given in moderation.

What kind of dental problem do you think he could have? I forget when, Maybe April but he was having an issue where he was pawing at his mouth and I thought he had a dental problem. I brought him to the vet, they had that tool thing and looked in his mouth and saw nothing. Just a lot of saliva. So do you think it's possible that he just has a lot of saliva? If not, I will definitly bring him to the vet. He's eating and acting normal, eating his hay, greeting me and playing with his octupus. What do you think?

If the vet looked into his mouth with an otoscope he would not have been able to see the molars anyway.

As your piggy seems to be eating well and is active,it could just be excess saliva.I take it he is not losing weight?.

Yep my piggy is eating and very active. He's the size that he's always been , he even finished all his pellets and most of his hay last night. I had to refill his hay holder this morning. Nope, he's not losing weight. Since he doesn't have any of these signs, it's not a dental problem is it?I really hope not :'(

can guinea pigs have excess saliva?I will keep a closer eye on him when he eats.

It certainly does not sound like a dental problem. They can get excess saliva but there is usually some problem underlying this.Just keep a close watch on him for the time being.

RE the food, try feeding him different things everyday, and new things sometimes, I think if you were eating brocolli everyday for a week, you might go off it too ;D

Yesterday when he ate his kale and red pepper he had no saliva like he has before. The towel was clean and so was his mouth O0

I was also going to say just try new things as they like a variety just like us.
Mine do get messy after just eating grass ;D
Piggys sometimes have 'off days' and just wont touch a certain food they liked before its just perfectly normal really. ::)

Yes they do have offdays :) Lately Shura's mouth has been clean.. which is good O0 Yep I'm going to try more variety. I gave them celery yesterday and they lived it!
