Here are some rather discoloured pictures of my childhood piggies I have come across lately; they were all perus since my dad didn't like shorthaired smooth guinea pigs and those two breeds was about all that was around at the time!

Wuschel (1971-1981) (the name would translate to "tousles" )

He was our first (unfortunately single) piggy, who nevertheless lived a busy life as a beloved family pet until nearly ten years old. In his later years, he often spent his days on the lawn with the bereaved neighbour's boar who he got on extremely well - they invariably ended up snuggled together after some initial chasing round. Sadly, my mum wouldn't allow me to ask the neighbour whether Perky could come and live with Wuschel permanently because he was stuck in a tiny hutch outside for most of the time and frankly not very much looked after. :(

Strolch (1981-1987) (rascal)

After Wuschel had to be pts when old age finally caught up with him, my sister and I got a piggy each as a Christmas surprise present - we were both so delighted! I instantly fell in love with the tricolour boy, who I named Strolch, and my sister with the ginger and white girl, who she called Stupsi (nudgy) and who she adored. And yes, we promptly had babies! rolleyes :red
Here they are with their brood (Strolch was already neutered by this time), by chance nicely sorted into genders just before the youngsters went to their new homes with various friends of the family. The son is with his dad and the three daughters are with mummy.

Sadly, a neighbour's dog managed to bite his way through the badly maintained fence and kill Stupsi (Strolch was saved because the commotion was noticed). Because he was grieving really badly, we had to find him a new wife in a hurry. We ended up with Boehnchen (Beanie), who had a cataract in one eye. Two years later, they became victims of the same dog again, even though my dad had completely rebuilt the run and made it much safer and more solid, with a firm lid. Strolch had been going still very strongly aged six.
He was big softie, very cuddly and vocal. He still has a firm place in my memories and my heart.

I have lost some pictures over time (somebody chucked the collage with my piggy pics that I had at uni in the bin), but I am glad for those few pics that have survived; they keep the memories alive!

Nothing compared to the literally thousands of pics I have now, though! mallethead

:)):)):)) You can never have too many photos! rolleyes

Beautiful piggies I must say. Especially the babies. Glad they could live as one big happy family with no incidents other than the dog attack.....

Oh Wiebke they are all so beautiful, i can see how they forged your lifelong love of piggies! What a shame about the dog incidents though :( you must have been so so sad!

Oh and Wuschel living until the old age of 10 - just amazing! I can't imagine having my piggies for ten whole years - woweee! So much would have happened in my life - not to mention i'll be 37!

That was the age I emigrated to Britain... so you never know what's around the corner! :(|)

Sadly, due to the factory style churning out of piggies, the average age has come down drastically over the last decades while the frequency of medical problems has increased. Those childhood piggies had about 4 bouts of diarrhea between them - that was all, except for Wuschel's last illness. And Wuschel's long life was not all that exceptional at all.

My "adulthood" piggies have in many ways a much better and happier life, and yet I am a regular at the vets! mallethead

I was thinking about this just the other day. It is such a shame. You see similar things with pure breed dogs i.e the English Bull Dog being bred for its flat face - they now consistently have breathing problems, just to fulfill our needs :( but that is another topic of its own!

Hope you dont mind me posting a pigture of my first piggie I was 14 years old - her name of helga and she was gorgeous himilayan

Just noticed that Wuschel was born in the same year as me, dont feel so old now! :))
Ay yi yi, my son was born in 1972, so how old should *I* feel? (Those photos of Red and my guest were taken on the 16th, the day after I turned 58 )

Ooooooh, by the time I was 37 my son was grown and gone, and I was with the man who became my second husband, and I was already a Vietnam-era military veteran, and you are SO right that so much would have happened in your life! You can be one of 3 kinds of people - those who watch things happen, those who make things happen, and those who wonder, "What happened?" I was always the second kind. Now, if I manage to have Redemption for 10 years, I'll be 67 when that happens. . . .

THAT is one of the most interesting piggie pix I have seen yet! The little ones look just like the big ones!

Thank you so much for sharing those beautiful pictures with us and taking us through their stories (albeit not all happy, unfortunately). Your piggies were all gorgeous and looked the perfect picture of health. What a wonderful legacy they left behind...I'm guessing that your fabulous tribe of today can thank your childhood piggies for getting you so smitten with these amazing creatures.

I could look through photos like these all day long x :)

Aw thank you for sharing. What gorgeous piggies they all were.

How cute - and what a beauty! Good to know that we were not the only ones whose piggies ended up in the dolls house! When they were young and small enough, they enjoyed squeezing in and out of the window!

Thanks for sharing your old pictures and memories of your childhood piggies with us. Those old photo's are beautiful, theres something about old faded photos that is magical.
