I’ve been wanting to introduce my piggies to fresh grass but unfortunately I have no grass in my garden and living in central London means I don’t trust any of the grass I come across to not be treated. I was thinking of getting a Piddle Patch which is fresh untreated grass meant for dogs to use the bathroom on but maybe could be a good option for my city piggies? Explicitly says on the site that there’s no chemicals used, no toxic weeds or anything and in the reviews people mentioned their dogs having a little munch on the grass now and then..would this be an ok option? Is there anything I’m not thinking of here? Piddle Patch - a real grass toilet your dog will love - Piddle Patch

:agr: I planted some grass in a glass bowl maybe two years ago. Despite it being outside and neglected, it’s still going!

All you need is some trays, some soil and some grass seed from a garden centre and you can then sow at regular intervals to have a supply of grass. It’ll be considerably cheaper
Sure but that would take ages to grow and I’m not particularly good at looking after plants or have much desire/time/space to do so. I was asking if the option I posted was safe.

It appears to be safe. How are you planning on using it? Just putting them on it once or twice and then throwing it away and getting another?
If you put the piggies directly on this kind of tray they will chew it right down within a very short space of time - within hours.

That's why I don't buy bumper packs of biscuits!

It looks tempting to me. If you have the money it's worth giving it a go. People spend on occasional treats such as hay-cubes or carrot cottages so why not fresh grass? They will mow it down within hours but that's what it's there for! Established grass grows pretty quick so if you have the space to put it elsewhere (outside on a balcony or near a window for a week or on a table outside the backdoor) and give it a bit of water it should grow back. Personally don't know if I'd bother with the metal tray bit as piggies also love to chew cardboard! But If I was hoping to move my 'patch' and re-grow it using a tray might be easier.

You can get rolls of turf from garden centres or B&Q for about £5 each but these have usually been rolled up for a while so would have to be unrolled, put somewhere suitable, watered and left for a week or so to recover. These would not be available in winter, but if piddle patch comes all year round that'd be cool.

I have a stone planting trough with 3 lavenders in and I used to tip the dust from the bottom of the hay bag into this. Now you can't see the lavender for hay grass and I've got to root the whole thing out and re-do it, which is a bit of a nightmare but I'm going to let the pigs help 😉 If you have a big plant pot with some soil in it's worth a go - the grass that grows from the dust in the bag should be super appealing. Good luck, and what a kind owner you are x

I planted grass seed in a plastic pot 4 days ago and its sprouting already, it will be long enough to cut in a week. This instant grass should be fine for them to eat but I doubt it will regrow well unless there is a way to feed it, with the shallow depth of the tray I doubt the grass grows very long. I used to grow grass in seed trays and give the whole thing to the piggies to climb in and eat but I found the depth of soil was too shallow to get a good regrowth. I grow it in pots now and can get a second and sometimes third cut before it becomes poor and needs starting again.

Have you seen one in real life? I’d just be a little concerned about the moisture retaining mat. What is it made from? Knowing that my piggies would choose the deadly option every time, I’d be concerned they would try and eat the mat instead of the grass…. (I’ve got visions of it being like a gel filled nappy type thing to absorb the piddle)

I don't know the answer to your question but I buy cat grass seeds, the grass grows easily and quickly in pots, and you could buy a little kit on Amazon if easier:

Sounds like the Piddle Patch will be fine. I also have more money than time and although the money saving tips are great, you asked if healthy grass is ok for your pigs. I put mine on the lawn and have given them cat grass. They love it! Just be sure their systems can handle it-if you see diarrhea, take it out.
