We have one pig right now (introductions to possible companions coming this week). Her cage is C&C 5x2 with a GuineaDads floor mat. She has access to an area about 40 sq ft which is covered with puppy pads and then a fleece blanket on top. She prefers to tunnel underneath whatever surfaces we have provided for her. She will tunnel under the GuineaDads mat and sit on the chloroplast. Then she pees on the chloroplast, which is not hygenic for her and harder for us to keep clean. We have anchored the fleece blanker to the floor, otherwise she will tunnel under that.

We have provided her with a ton of boxes with holes cut in both ends, fleece pigloos, two hammocks, cardboard tunnels, and there is the pocket at the end of the Guinea Dads mat. We have tried every alternative to give her a place to hide, including a second GuineaDads mat on top of the first one, so she can hide under the second mat while staying no top of the first one. I have also tried inserting a small GuineaDads mat into the pocket of the large one. We have left some towels on top of the fleece blanket so she can hide under those. No matter what we provide she mostly prefers to tunnel under the bottom layer next to the floor.

We have also noticed that during floor time, she likes to sit on the tiled part of the floor, which is colder than the blanket. We are wondering if she is for some reason too warm and is trying to cool down.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

A lone piggy in a large open area may be feeling insecure and looking to hide. Has she got plenty of tunnels? But in fairness some piggies are simply burrowers. In the past some members have managed to secure their fleece liners to the side of the correx using clips to prevent burrowing. I’ll see if I can find any other links for you

My Chez burrows and I have learned to live with it. I don't particularly like it because he gets poop out of the cage and onto the coroplast. Also I worry about my other pig cornering him.

The space is definitely not a large open area. Tons of tunnels, boxes, fleece hidies, pockets, and other places to hide.

One of mine used to do this. It was a constant battle with him for a while trying to keep the fleece weighted down with various wooden hideys and tunnels. He did grow out of it after a while.
