Hello! My 1 year old pig start losing weight more than a month ago. He became progressively uninterested in most food although he was still interested in fresh grass until the end. When we realised that he had a lost quite a lot of weight, we took him to the vet. The vet found nothing wrong, but suggested to monitor his eating beahviour and prescribed him panacur just in case he had parasites (although the pig had no diarrhea or other specific symptoms). We brought him home. The pig weighted at that point 650 gr, but was behaving quite normally, except not eating dry food. Two days later, immediately after we gave him the second dose of panacur (just a coincidence? who knows?), he started having hicups and 2 hours later he was dead. Everyone will imagine how devastating this was. The pig appeared mostly fine until two hours before and was dead two hours later. We are sure he did not choke on anything as there were three people with him and we are sure he did not ingest anything apart from panacur before starting with the hickups. Can anyone suggest what he died of?

Sorry for your loss... I can't offer any medical advice other than your piggy was probably very poorly... sometimes we just don't know why x

Sorry to hear this, piggies rarely get worms and at a guess if he couldnt manage hard food it could have been a dental issue with the back teeth... but once the guts stop working properly and processing enough hay they go downhill very fast... sorry for your loss x

So sorry for your loss.
Unfortunately when piggies get sick they can go downhill fast because they hide illness so well until it’s too late.
You did the right thing in going to a vet.

Do have another piggy who is also grieving?
He / she will be ready for another companion before you.

Be gentle with yourself and allow yourself time to grieve

Feel free to post a tribute to your piggy on the Rainbow Bridge thread

Thanks all for your kind words. We have already found a companion, a male baby. We will introduce them today, hopefully they will like each other

Let us know how things go with the bonding.
I found the forum bonding guides excellent when I bonded piggies last year.
They saved my sanity.
