Hi all,

Getting our pig back from the vets today. He's not even a year old and caught pneumonia and according to the vet nearly died - they really didn't think he'd live through the first night.

Does anyone have experience in this situation? The vet has suggested he will need to be watched carefully and more susceptible to respiratory problems in the future - anyone had this before and can say what their experience was and how long it took them to get better?

Thank you

Poor boy, it's great news that he is able to come home though. Is he on any antibiotics? or diuretics for fluid on the chest?

My Buzz had Pneumonia and he was on Zithromax (antibiotic), diuretic and we used steam therapy with a steam inhaler and a drop of Olbas oil. I think he was on Bisolvon for mucous in the nasal passages too. I think it took him about 3 weeks in total to recover. We did lose him a few months later though due to another bout of Pneumonia. I can't be sure they were the same strain though. The second was more typical of walking Pneumonia which strikes out of the blue and can kill in hours. We lost another pig Izzie the same day.

Not exactly sure right now but the vet had said a strong dose of antibiotics. He's breathing well now so they're mostly concerned that he gets his weight and strength back up. I'm so sorry to hear about your poor little pigs. it's heartening that in the first instance it took him a relatively short time to get back to fitness.
