My 2 year old male guinea pig has bee huddled in the corner of his cage for a couple of days with his fur fluffed up and not eating or drinking.
Took him to the vets when first noticed he was ill and he was given injections of antibiotics, metoclopramide and pain killers. He did not pick up over 24 hours so I took him back and he was given more metoclopramide and painkillers and fibreflex. He still 2 days later will not eat or drink, he is only haviong what I am syringing in.
A short while ago his poo which at the moment is small and wet looking, had some blood on the outside. The vet has now given us antibiotics to try as well as the other meds.
Any ideas? or am I prolonging something more sinister? when you show him food, he puts his teeth on it but will not bite, teeth are ok according to the vet.

I cant give you any advice as I know nothing, all I wanted to say was keep up with the syringing him food and hopefully he is feeling better soon x

could you get a second opinion?

Just if it isnt a guinea pig savvy vet there is every chance they could be looking at the wrong teeth.

Hope your piggy is ok xx

you have to feed your GP manually until he will be fine or he will die.
around 250gr every day mashed burgess excell or other nuggets.optionally you need to buy recovery mix.give medicine is not enough.
There a lot of videos on youtube how to do it.Go to pharmacy and buy syrenge.
I used blender to mash nuggets.mix it with water.

What does he weigh?
What antibiotics is he being given?
What is the dose?
Has a poo culture been done and if so what was the result?

Without these answers it's difficult to make any more suggestions.

Given his condition however the three things you should be doing is
a) getting 120ml of food down him every 24 hours (20-30ml every 2-3 hours)
b) weighing him every day to monitor for weight loss
c) giving any gut stimulant the vet gives you i.e. metoclopromide (and also think about zantac 2-10mg/kg twice daily)

Since late last night he has managed to eat a little grass hand fed on 3 sessions (every 2-3 hrs). He has managed grass again this morning and a thin peeling of carrot (one strip). Giving him about 10ml of fluid at each session also.
The antibiotics he has been given are Baytril 0.2ml daily and he also has metacam 0.6ml daily. He is still having the fibreflex 3 times a day also. We will be taking him back Monday evening to the vets to decide where to go next as it will have been five days of manually feeding him by then.
He still sits in the same place in the cage staring at the wall, despite all the above.
He weighs 1150 grams so is a good size pig and no a poo culture has not been done.

He is having 0.6ml daily, although after the response on the dose I have not given him any this evening. I did wonder if maybe the large dose is making him lethargic and not interested in food?
I really don't think he is doing well as it seems he has become quite floppy as well today. Very worried now that this is not treatable.
