Pig Squeaking When Going Toilet

Hi all I've not been on here in a little while but wondered if anyone could hazard a guess as to what might be wrong with my Ted please..

This evening I've noticed him making a faint squeaking noise, which seems to become a little louder when he poops. It may be a coincidence but I was just watching him and he arched his back to poo and squeaking seemed to increase. It's not constant and apart from the squeaks he seems completely normal, eating, drinking and moving around. I had a look at his bum, couldn't see any obvious problems but I don't know what I'm looking for?

Thought about impaction after reading up but he's only about 6 months old - can this occur in younger boars? My OH will take him to the vet in the morning for a check up I'm just worried in the mean time :(
 
It could be a urinary tract infection, they tend to squeak when pooing if they have one (aswell as when peeing). Treatment will be with antibiotics, Septrin is usually the most effective. Make sure he has plenty of fluids too. I would also ask the vet for pain relief.

Impaction in younger boars is rare, as it is caused by weakening muscles; he is also too young for stones. At his young age, urinary tract infection is the most likely culprit. Good that you have booked him already in!

Plenty of fluids and some mildly diuretic foods like fresh grass, dandelion, cucumber or lettuce can help with washing the bacteria out once you have got a proper diagnosis. Please do not overdo the fresh foods so you don't end up with diarrhea on top of everything!

You may want to get a probiotic to bolster the effect of any antibiotic (if necessary ask the vet, especially if you are prescribed baytril) as well as give some extra vitamin C to help the immune system. If it is a urinary tract infection, a painkiller/anti-inflammatory for the first few days can also help with easing the acute symptoms. You may need to ask your vet for one.

Hi yeah vet thinks it is a urine infection, prescribed baytrill and pain relief. I look forward to administering our first dose in the morning :doh:

He's still intent on humping gizmo so I have hope for the little fella.
 
Could you or your husband get some probiotics as well? Baytril can often have an appetite dampening effect and cause the poo to go softer. Contact the vet immediately if he loses his appetite completely or has diarrhea. Please brace yourself that baytril is about has horrible tasting as you can get. You can either syringe it in one go and then stuff the mouth with something strong tasting like ribena or mix it in with ribena and syringe the mix.

You give a pinch of probiotics about 1-2 hours after the antibiotic, either on a piece of his favourite veg or mixed into 1ml of ater and syringed.

All the best! You have caught it early, so he should hopefully get over it quickly. You still need to go the whole length with the course as UTI can be persistent.
 
We will go to pets at home in the morning for some probiotics, I read on a post that they sell it there?

The vet did say that if he stops eating to stop the baytrill and make sure he eats some mushed up pellets instead. He has a check up booked on Monday afternoon to see how he is doing. She suggested doing the pain relief which tastes nice swiftly followed by the baytrill mixed with ribena.

I will no doubt be back with more questions! Thanks ever so much for your advice x
