Hi

I have just got back from seeing my horse and my piggie, who was fine earlier, has diarrhea.
He seems fine otherwise, bright eyed and alert, but one or two poos in the cage were half soft half puddle.
The only thing I have changed recently is their food - they ran out unexpectedly and I had to nip to the supermarket so instead of their usual Excel they have Wagg Guinea Pig Crunch. It's a cereal type one rather than pellets. They LOVE it. They are eating tons of it, I usually just leave the food in ad lib but they are emptying the bowls and going through about 4 a day (I have 2 pigs).
Checked other pig and he is fine, he's the younger one too. Older pig I have just cleaned up and popped back in the cage. I shall withhold their veg today and give it in the morning instead, if older pig seems better. I will just make sure they have lots of water, hay and refill their food tonight.

Does that seem okay? Anyone have any tips?

That seems OK, thats we we did for Scruffy recently when he had an upset tum. Lots of hay and water, and no veg. It might be the change in cereal thats upset him, hope he is OK!

It sounds like the sudden change in diet was to blame, although it's nice to hear that they've taken to the new food so well! Maybe try mixing the old food and new, when you're able to find some Excel Nuggets again?

Withold the veg for at least 24 hours, ideally 36-48 hours so you can be sure his system has recovered. The best remedy, assuming it is a simple dietary related problem, is to feed lots of hay and ensure he is drinking plenty of water.

It's worth reducing the amount of Wagg you are giving them as well; how old are the piggies? Once they're over 6-8 months, it's worth limiting the dry food to discourage excessive weight gain! 4 bowls does sound too much, even between two pigs; aim to reduce it to an absolute maximum of two bowls a day if you can (ideally one).

The older one is about..... 10 months, the younger one about 3 months.
This is their 3rd day on the Wagg. They do like it but I dont, I prefer their Excel nuggets! This one doesnt seem as nice.

2 bowls a day would be quite fair for another few months then. I agree that the plain nugget feeds are preferable - you may have to compromise if they don't accept a change back onto Excel too easily!

Hope your poorly pig is feeling much better very soon. :)

Just reduce the green element in the diet and increase the hay and fibrous foods such as celery and carrots for a couple of days. That is usually more than adequate to solve the problem.
