Pig passed away yesterday. He was 5 years old, and had a bad case of bloat which he'd suffered from in the past. I took him to the vets and they gave him painkillers and gut medicine by injection. He was in a bad way on Tuesday and when I woke up yesterday he had gone :-(

I'm devastated and can't stop thinking about him. I hope that he went peacefully and not in pain. I have buried him at the bottom of the garden, in his cuddle cup inside a shoebox wrapped in towels. I put some of his favourite treats inside and a little note. I keep getting sad thinking of him underground in the cold and dark, but I have to think that it is just his body, and his piggy spirit is in a happier place and that he is running around a big grassy garden, popcorning and having a lovely time.

I love you Pig.

I am ever so sorry that you have lost your beautiful boy! Severe bloat is a nasty thing to come down with, and it sadly kills more often than not. I have lost two piggies to it, despite doing all the right things and seeing the vet as an emergency... The sheer amount of suffering and pain your piggy is in, as well as the quickness and severity with which bloat can hit can leave you very shaken. :(

Perhaps it helps if you think of having a new little furry guardian angel helping you? It usually helps me, as I feel that my RIP piggies are still very much with me in my heart, even though their bodies rest in the garden. Make sure that you create a visible reminder of Pig, be it a favourite plant, a stone or wood marker, a picture or collage etc. whenever this feels right.

If Pig has left a companion, you may find these tips here helpful: https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/looking-after-a-bereaved-piggy.110463/

So sorry for your loss, Pig will be happily pop corning and playing at the Rainbow Bridge with all the other Piggies who have left us, he will be in no discomfort now, just running, eating and playing happily.

Sweet Dreams little Pig x (((HUGS)))

Thank you for your kind words. I'm finding it very hard at the moment and feel like bursting into tears all the time :-(

Wiebke - yes, it was very nasty bloat. I got him to the vets for injections so hopefully when he passed he was not in pain. He had bloat earlier in the year but managed to cure it. We had Pig on our wedding cake topper, and I have bought a little glass dome for it, so he will always be around in our home (see attached)

I'm also buying a guinea pig garden ornament that looks like him to put on the grave and a nice pot plant.

AWWW - what a special memory that is! You did what you could for him and he was in as much comfort as could be provided, so please don't feel guilty or like you failed Pig, you haven't! Sadly, bloat can make a sudden return, and the second or third time round it is often vicious and untreatable, even though you got well over the first round. :( :( :(

Please give yourself time to grieve. Pig was very special for you and he died quite suddenly, so you haven't had time to brace yourself for it. It is always harder to deal with at first, as you have a double dose between the shock and the pain of the loss. As he was such an integral part of your life, it is going to take quite some time for you to getting used to him not being around anymore.

I am so sorry for the loss of your beautiful boy. The pain killing injections would have kept him pain free you can be sure of that. Bloat is awful and we have lost a piggy to it in the past, there is often nothing that can be done. I know it is hard but try to focus on the good times. You shared such a lovely bond and had him in your life and nothing will ever change that, he will stay in your heart forever. The pain after a while will dampen and you will find a new kind of normal, grief is complex so take each day as it comes. Huge hugs x

RIP Pig

Thank you so much for your kind words, it really means a lot. x

So sorry. Bloat can strike so quickly and so hard that it can be very difficult to overcome. Don't beat yourself up. Allow time to grieve. You've lost a member of your family. Popcorn free Pig x
