Hello!

I just got back from a two day stay at my moms and my pigs didnt seem to eat anything. We went for a family emergency and gave them tons of hay and food. We expected to be away for a long period so we took our other animals but left the piggies because they would have a home at my moms. With thr intentions of coming and checking on then every other day, we gave them plently of hay and food. But when we got back its like they didn't eat at all.

Is it possible they were upset we were gone and didnt eat? Because once we got home thwy ate half their hay and made a normal mess of their food dishes. I'm worried to leave them alone again on the off chance theyre too upset to eat normally :/ we feel bad now that we left them home but were concerned it might be a vet issue

This doesn't sound usual. If piggies don't eat then their bodily organs start to shut down quite quickly. If they had not been eating for two days I very much doubt you would have come back to live guinea pigs had they not eaten. Perhaps something happened while you were away that spooked them which stopped them from eating as much as normal? Has their weight changed at all?

If your piggies are in their normal surroundings and getting their normal food, they should eat.
I have a pet sitter coming in to feed and check on my own guinea pigs whenever we are away and board my guinea pigs on medication/observation with a friend. That has worked out well over the years.

Have you weighed your guinea pigs to see whether they have actually lost weight and made sure that they have been fed etc. in your absence? Please do not leave your guinea pigs unfed for more than 24 hours. Guinea pigs need a steady food and water supply!
