i know from experience there are two possibilities as to what can cause this, his name is taz and his first birthday is on the 1st of december, i gave him kale today, then tonight he started to cry when urinating, this could be cystitis, UTI, or bladder stone, he is able to pee small amounts what do any of urselves think this could be, i am taking him to the vets tomorrow, i gave him infacol tonight as he was slightly bloated that helped, i gave him 0.1ml of metacam as i know the dose rate, and i had some septrin in the house incase of emergencies he seems to be more comfy now.

Sounds as if it could be a UTI, good luck at the vets, I think you will find that is what they will say in the first instance, so you will probably come away with antibiotics and pain killers.

It's generally much more likely to be UTI in a young piggy, unless you are feeding a high calcium diet. However, you can never completely exclude stones, as they have a genetic component. If problems persist or recur, please have him x-rayed.

Let us know how he gets on at the vets, metacam is useful regardless of the cause as it helps with pain and inflammation

My Titch currently has the same problem exactly as you described. She is only a bit older than your guinea as well. I'm sure genetics plays a part as I haven't really fed her a real high calcium diet and living in very ahard water area I have given her filtered water from day one.

I did notice if I gave her romaine she cried more, so knocked that on the head, maybe stay away from kale or anything like it.

The vet said she feels Titchs bladder was small no wee in it, as if she is peeing a lot, she was adament it is likely to be cystitis at her age so hopefully that's the case in your guinea as well, it's not nice hearing them cry like it, but the metacam has helped and your guinea will probably love taking it.

I took Titch to a better vet this time and she said if she is x rayed she will do it with her in a towel! my other vet wanted to pts to do it, so I changed vet practice.

It will be interesting to see what your vet says. X

hi guys thanx for the comments turned out to be a UTI, he was given septrin, i have metacam at home so got the dose rate from vet, i also figured out that the only difference in diet was i fed him kale, thats when the crying happened, so i strucked it out, thanx again taz is very thankful, he is not crying anymore and is back to his young self, give him big birthday hugs for sunday, he will be a big one year old.

I'm glad it turned out to be a simple UTI type problem, but never rule out that some pigs have a predisposition to producing mineral deposits, sludge/gravel/crystals, call them what you may.

I have several piggies like this in the past , and at the moment in particular an old boy called Crinkle, and he has spent the past six years periodically wheekig when he wee's and has been on all the drugs had all the xray and scans, but the only thing that helps him is to increase his water intake by feeding him watery vegetables like cucumber to flush his bladder out,

As long as eats large portions of cucumber/celery/red peppers etc. He does not wheek when he wee's ,
He eats approximately the equivalent of half a cucumber daily though you need to introduce this slowly if that is your pigs problem,

NB: amendment to my last post while'st red peppers are an excellent source of vitamin C, I feed them more sparingly than other low calcium watery vegetables as apparently Vit C can cause a development of cystrate problems (there are many minerals responsible for bladder and kidney stones)

thanx everyone I give my piggies green/red peppers, cucumber, little gems, broccli and carrots, celery, they are washed and nice and wet for them hopefully this will help them stay clear of utis or bladder stones i have decreased their calcium intake.

I have a 'bladder' piggy and advised to give unsweetened cranberry juice daily in his water bottle, he also has Cystaid half a capsule.
His diet is very very low or zero calcium but he still does the odd wheek when peeing - a lot of it is down to habit forming as he expects to feel pain and it is something he inherited
Be cautious of administering medications without the authorisation of your Vet, a quick call is recommended. Our Exotics are happy to advise over the phone for piggies they have records for as they know them and know I am experienced but only ever call to ask if it's ok to give them a stat dose of Metacam pre appointment.
Hugs to your boy x
