I have 2 guinea pigs over 1200gs and in the past when they have been scratching etc I have treated them with Xeno 450 (1 pipette). Now that xeno 450 is no longer available, this time I tried beaphar Spot On. Maisie was fine, but Biscuit went manic. She was rushing about, couldn't sit still, was wide eyed, jumpy, totally wired! She was so distressed. Then she went quiet and hid. She had always been my baby, lovey dovey and affectionate, and totally bonds with me. But she seems scared, won't come near me and is still, four days later, going mental. I picked her out the cage today to see if she was okay and it seemed as though it hurt her for me to touch her. Now I don't know what to do, but I am very concerned for her welfare. Has anybody else's piggies displayed this behaviour after treatment? Any advice is appreciated.

Oh no that’s awful for you to experience and awful for poor Biscuit
I haven’t any experience of this - I always go to a Vet for advice and treatment
I think maybe you should take her to your Vet for a check ?
maybe she is reacting to the product ?
Is her weight stable ? Is she eating normally ?

Please do take her to the vet about her reaction.

It is so frustrating that xeno is having supply issues but do note that such mite products available from pet shops arent recommended.
They do contain ivermectin but it is too low dosed to cure to a diagnosed case of mites. They can suppress mites but generally members who use it see mites come back.

I hope she is ok

Thank you for your advice. I will arrange to take her to the vets. But she does seem slightly more "normal" today. Does anybody have an alternative to Xeno 450? Crazy that this seems to be the only proper strength treatment that is available with no others?

The only one I know of is kitten stronghold but you would need a vet to prescribe it.

Yes, as gem789 has said, stronghold (which is selamectin rather than ivermectin based) with a vet prescription is the alternative.
