My guinea pig has been breathing heavy and labored for the last day after she got to run around. She stays right by the water bottle and food dish, and she is sleeping a little more than normal. What could be the issue, and how can I help?

It is possible that she has an upper respiratory infection or pneumonia, but heart issues also need to be ruled out. Is she nodding as she breathes? Where abouts are you? was it hot when she was running around? If so then it could even be heatstroke. Does she have any sign of a crusty nose or watery eyes?

She really needs to see a vet as soon as possible for antibiotics (and probiotics) and also diuretic if she has any fluid on her chest.

Hi! I fully agree with Helen. Please have her seen by a vet as soon as you can, ideally today; this is a serious health problem. We have got a piggy savvy vet locator for our UK members on the top bar.

With members from all over the world, you can help us a lot in giving you appropriate advice and recommendations straight away if you added your country, state or (for the UK) your county to your details, so we can take the particulars of your part of the globe into consideration. Please click on your username on the top bar, then go to personal details, then location. Thanks!
