So a few days ago we noticed a swollen teat/mammary gland on one of our two male piggies, Patch.
A middle aged pig of 4 and a half years.

The first vet gave us some antibiotics and metacam, but I wasn't convinced by the treatment, so I hunted out and took him to see an exotic pet specialist a couple of days later.
The upshot is that he is about to go in to the Vet hospital for the removal of the teat/gland/mass and surrounding tissue... poor fella.

In himself he is happy, eating, drinking, chirping, and generally being daft as ever, no breathing issues or other lumps... my fear is that this is not a benign lump, but I guess only removal and a biopsy will give us that answer.

He is going to be at the hospital for at least 24 hours, but does anyone have any experience of similar procedures and best recovery practices?

Cheers for any advice and information - best go empty the family piggy bank...

Hi, sorry that your piggy is having problems. I have had several piggies where they have had mammary gland tumours removed. If caught early they do very well. I have never had one recur to date. I never sent them for analysis as there is nothing else they can do if it is cancer. I suppose it would be reassuring to know if it is benign. Hope it goes well

Here are some helpful tips for post op care- Tips For Post-operative Care
Best of luck!
P.S. Well done for putting in the effort to find a suitable vet, as it often makes a world of difference!

thanks for that, I'll have a read of those tips.

I did opt for a biopsy, as I thought it was best to know - even though it changes nothing it at least lets me give my kids the right information about what may or may not be.

Poor fella is likely under the knife as I type :(

Good news, Mr Patch has had his op and is in an incubator coming round. Then he will be hand fed for a bit and moved to the exotic ward (the mind boggles), to be monitored and assessed tomorrow for when he can come home.
The lump has been sent for biopsy, so a case of fingers crossed... but in the short term the op went well :)

Hooray!
Glad the op went well.:)
Hopefully the results will be what you have hoped for.
