Hi
I've had my rescue guinea pigs for a year and have had to go to the vets several times. They are approx 2 years old. The sow, Rosie, had difficulty eating and lost weight and ended up having her teeth filed in July (exotic pet vet). She perked up and put on weight. (The vets closed down so had to find another!) 6 weeks later this had to be done again - by a different vet (not exotic). She put on weight and was fine. This week it's happened again and the vet wants her in on Friday to do the same op. I went in on Monday and today and stated how worried I am putting her through this procedure again. He said he'd try and sort it out but said if it can't be fone the only option would be euthanasing her! I'm beside myself! Not sure whether to take her Friday now ( she was absolutely fine after the op last time) or try and go somewhere else. Please can I have your thoughts?
Thank you!

That is terrible advice! Is there any way you can get to Northampton to see Simon or Kim Maddock? They are the best vets to see for dental treatment. If not try one of the Forum recommended vets at the vet locator at the top of the page. I would change your vet with advice like that!

Please book your piggy in at the Cat&Rabbit Care Clinic in Northampton. They are currently the most dental-savvy vet and see guinea pigs with dental issues from all over the country, from as far as Edinburgh or the Southwest. Simon Maddock has saved many guinea pigs that had been given up by their vets and has allowed them to live normal lives. It is REALLY worth the travel! He does about 15 piggy dentals in a week on average, so we will know exactly what to do. He also uses GA that is not as bad for guinea pigs as the normal stuff, and uses as little (or preferably none at all) as he can safely get away with, so repeat procedures are not an issue - and it is the aftercare that is crucial to get on top of dental problems in the long term.

With his competent care, your piggy should have got a fair bit of mileage in it, and will hopefully be able to live a normal life span with full quality of life again.
I am using him myself; my Hywel has lived a year longer than he would have otherwise had and only passed away shortly before his 7th birthday.

Until you can have her seen, please support your guinea pig with syringe feed, mushed pellets and finely grated veg. Our syringe feeding guide has got a section on caring for dental guinea pigs: Complete Syringe Feeding Guide

Please use our syringe feeding guide with advice on caring for dental guinea pigs until you can have her seen. I have included the link in my first post.

I am, at present, syringe feeding her with recovery food, 3x a day and she has put on a few grams. Thank you? I'll read the link also.

11.30 with Simon. I have a bit of a trek to get there as I live near Newbury, Berkshire, but hopefully it'll be worth it!

Hi
We got on really well thank you!
The staff were lovely, Simon was amazing with both my piggies - filing Rosies teeth whilst she was conscious (no GA or sedation) - she went back in her carry box and started to eat straight away! Then giving Buddy a thorough examination. He ended up having an x-ray, which luckily didn't throw up anything too alarming!
Today both piggies are eating - so a fabulous result! I am so grateful to have found someone who actually knows about guinea pigs and that I have confidence in! The piggies didnt seem to mind the long journey too much - pretty much squeaked there and back! Thank you all for the advice! Xx
