I haven't got any piggies yet, but am hopefully going to be getting a pair/trio of females in mid June. I've been thinking of names and I'd really like to know how people come up with the names for their piggies. :)

I usually look at their colouring, background & behaviour.
Minnow- because she has the colourings of the fish and was extremly small.
Oliver- because he came off the streets and was rescued, like Oliver Twist.
Daisy-because she was so bossy and cow like :))

Have fun with your new sows!

Nibbles - because he tried to eat his way out of the carrier on the way home
Nutty - because we passed a Nutella lorry and he was chocolate spread coloured (though we decided Nutella sounded a little too girly!)
Bingo - named after the guinea pig on Pet Squad which my brothers like
Buddy - named by my Mum because he was so caring, coming and fetching food and veggies for Bingo when they first arrived and Bingo was too scared to come out much

It is down to looks and behaviour for me in deciding names!

Treacle - based on her colouring - she is dark brown (with tan flecks)
Bernadette - original name from the rescue. We debated changing it, but when we found out that Bernadette means 'Brave little bear' we decided to keep it.
Junior - looked like a previous guinea pig that had recently passed, so we named him Junior to honour him :) x

George - He's grey and so calm (named after George Clooney because his colouring)

Choccy - Again because of his colouring (and was the name that his previous owners gave him)

Patches - Because of the random splodges of colour on his otherwise white body.

Thank you for sharing your stories. All of your piggies sound so sweet. I can't wait until I get mine :)

If I were you, I'd make a shortlist of names you like and then wait until your piggies' personalities come out once they settle in. You can choose normal names or themes from your favourite tv/book series, sweets and other foods etc.

Mine have all Welsh names with a meaning that hopefully suits either their looks or their personality.

Ruby, cos she has ruby red eyes.
Primrose cos shes a lemon agouti (primroses are yellow)
Honey cos shes lovely ginger colour.
Alfie & Oscar, Blossom & Poppy cos we liked the names.
Minnie, her previous owners gave her her name.

My trio are twix and twirl (sisters almost twins!) and peanut - they came with these names

their colourings are like the chocolate bars/nut :-)

My boars Peppa and George came with their names.

My hammies I named are Bellatrix (had a dream about a hamster then saw her in the pet store!), crash (crazy little thing), pudding (she is fat), Daxter (from crash bandicoot), heisenberg (scientist/tv character) they were named just because :-) and then there is haribo ... I dont even know why he is called that.

My boys all have scottish names.

Arran, Hamish & Angus. Suilven is a gaelic name of a mountain and because Suilven is a Ridgeback he was named after a mountain.

Where are your pigs coming from? Will they come with names already?

You will begin to see what suits them when they arrive. Sometimes you pick a name and when you meet them it just doesn't fit but the right name always pops up!

Awww this is a cute thread, nice to see how people name their piggies!

I did list after list of names - wanted my pair of boars to have names that I liked on their own but that sounded right together too. A lot of the names on my shortlist just didn't seem to suit them in the end and only Wilbur & Otis felt right!

Bentley - He's grey with little white stripes like a racing car and i think it's a cute name

Chester - This one took a while, and he had a few other names on his list that we made, buttons, crunchy, biscuit, simba (he looks like a little lion) but i decided on Chester because he's a bit of a jester but i didn't want to call him that haha,

Marmite- He's brown and black with dude hair and i loved him and i love marmite ! Also we came up with "you either love him or you don't" as he was adopted the little quote fitted, he'd been in two previous homes where it hadn't worked out, my boyfriend found the quote hilarious for matching him and tells everyone thats why he's called that. He was almost called Gizmo because of his hair though.

the best thing is to make a list of names you like and watch them for a few days.

I went for opera/music. I can't remember the reason why but it seemed a good idea at the time.

So I have Dido, Tosca, Tutte, Mimi and Bella. They've all got their own personalities and the somehow the sound of the name fits.

I think somehow you just 'know' when you've got it right.

How exciting good luck getting your girls. I'm pretty rubbish at coming up with names and apart from Sookie and Rio my pigs have all been named by my sisters but this is their reasoning behind their names.
Spike - was a rex piggy and had spikey fur, not very original :P
Pumpkin - she had ginger markings that were the colour of pumpkin and was round and fat like a pumpkin :p
Munchkin - she was very small, munchkins are small
Sherbert - she was very hyper active when little and fizzed about like sherbert :))
Sookie - got the name from the show gilmore girls and it just seemed to suit her
Rio - again from a tv show, heard the name while thinking of getting another piggy and when I got Rio it just fit.

Rosie was named by my brother- its a very sweet girly name to match her looks( very floofy and white) However i wouldn't say she is a girly girly personalitywise.
Georgie(rip) , i'm not really sure why she was georgie, i liked the name but it suited her well personality wise as she was a bit of a tomboy.
And we now have Ruby, who was already named when we got her. She is a pink eyed golden so i would hazard a guess at her name. being from her eyes or her ginger hair :)
