We lost one of our 2 boars on Friday - Marty. We'd been to the vets, as the poor thing had some kind of leaking and swelling underneath. We thought Abscess, but vet said it was his testicle enlarged? Anyway, he seemed fine in himself - still eating, squeaking and drinking. Took the anti-inflammatory and anti-biotics that was prescribed, and was looking good Swelling went down by day 4, but then suddenly day 5 we came home from work to find he was barely moving. Tried to feed him some revive stuff we had, but he wouldn't even swallow it. Passed away an hour later. Wish we knew what it was...not that it would change anything.

We're both gutted, and his mate Percy is now alone. We're giving him plenty of attention, but he definitely seems quieter than normal.

We're probably going to leave it a week or so, but we will be looking for another mate for him. Percy is about a year old (came from Avalon rescue), and was with Marty - who came from P@H rescue - he was also about a year old. They always had their moments of clicking teeth etc. but generally got on well.

What should I be looking for in a new mate? A younger boar, so Percy can be the dominant one? One the same age? Obviously females are out, unless we have Percy neutered, which I probably wouldn't do.

We could go to a pet shop, but if we can we always prefer to re-home a piggie. Avalon is a long way to go though, and we haven't really got the time to go over there in the next month at least. Are there any around Birmingham area, other than the P@H rescues?

Walsall RSPCA are amazing

The potteries further afield in stoke are also great

Don't worry too much about age it's personality that matters and an experienced rescue with help with finding the right friend for your boy.
