So I'm a little bit worried about my gorgeous little REW boy Casper. :( He is happy, cheerful, and one of the most active of the bunch. He is eating and drinking very well and otherwise seems amazingly well. :) But he has a bit of a wheezy wheek, and I don't know whether I should be concerned.

He had a pretty bad URI a couple of months ago; got treatment with Baytril and some extra Vitamin C tablets, and was back to perfect health - running, popcorning, eating and being adorable! But his wheek sounds a bit wheezy, and I don't know whether it's always going to be that way because he was poorly, or whether I should be concerned. There's no hooting which I know can be a sign of heart problems, and I am going to take him to the vets within the next few days just to make sure. I want to know whether I'm making this into more than it is. It might be a strange comparison, but my dad had a very bad cold when he was younger, and has never really recovered his sense of smell. I wonder if this is how Casper is, and will always be cutely wheezing.

Has anyone else got a piggie with a bit of a wheezy wheek?

I had a piggie with a wheezy wheek a while back, she used to cough and splutter a lot... turns out shes allergic to woodshavings, took the herd off the stuff, she was instantly better Just a thought. It may however just be the remainders of the URI.

Hope all goes well at the vet.

x.

He has been on woodshavings his whole life (he's now approx 2 1/2) and has never had any issues before his URI. No real coughing, a little sneezing every now and then but that's normally after cage clean and there's obviously a bit of dust in the air.

I do love my Casper and hope he's OK! We were looking at him and his face shape earlier and I think he must have some Himalayan in him somewhere, he's got a cute little round face x)

This sounds similar to what is wrong with my little boy - minus the wee infection.

Any suggestions?

Thanks x

Casper is going to the vets tomorrow morning, wish him luck! I'm so nervous and worried for him in case it's something deeper :(

I am sure they can cure it as you have ensured he is going to the vets right away. I wish you luck.

Hi everyone, it's me, Casper! I'm writing in red as it matches my eyes :)
So I went to the vets today because I'm wheezy :( Mummy came and filmed me this morning so she could hear me - as you can tell I'm very talkative!

((Click on the picture to view - lots of piggie lips action!))

So after I stopped making a kerfuffle and Mummy got me in the carrier, the vet was very nice to me :) He said I was one of the best behaved piggies he's seen, even if I did try and jump off the table at one point!
After he listened to my heart and chest, he said I had a bit of a wheeze at the top of my chest, and gave me some HORRIBLE tasting medicine that Mummy says is called Baytril. I had a very nasty infection before, so whee don't want that happening again. But I might always be a little wheezy as I probably have a lickle bit of lung damage from my last one :( Other than that, I'm healthy, a good weight and a very happy piggie!

When I got home, I helped Mummy with veggie prep - aren't I cute? She gave me some cucumber and a little carrot for being so good :)

I am glad that there is nothing seriously wrong with your cutie boy!

I'm glad to hear its not serious :)
I played the video whilst Benny was on my lap, and as soon as he heard Casper wheeking, he sat up and wheeked really loudly :(|)
I think he was saying 'get well soon Casper!'
Xx

Aww, that's so cute! x) Thank you Benny, Casper will appreciate the wheeks I'm sure! He is wonderful, I think he'll always be my wheezy squeaky pig but at least we can clear up what little infection is there and keep an eye on it :)

I am so pleased it is nothing serious. What a gorgeous boy you have.

Am I the only one that sees a little bit of Himilayan in that cute little rounded face? He is adorabibble :-) x
Thank you for all your lovely words, he will be fine again before we know it :)

Thanks for the update and glad it's nothing too sinister - hope the Baytril (yucky stuff!) does the trick.:)

I'm sure it will, the vet was fantastic and really took his time with little Casper. Plus he gave me plenty of Baytril just in case he struggles with a wheeze in future :) He's on 0.8ml a day for the next 4-5 days, which I hope will make his lungs nice and healthy :)) I am so asking for that vet again next time - the only one I've ever seen at that clinic who seems to know what he's doing with piggies!
