Hello all - Sorry if I ramble on, I will try to keep this short...
I had to take one of my boys to the vet this morning. He was just sat hunched and fluffed up, no interest in food at all. He wasn't pooping or peeing either. The vet said she couldn't feel any poops in his tummy and gave him an injection of emeprid and metacam. He pooped almost straight away on the vets table which at the time I thought was good. However, since we have been home he still has no interest in food, and I have been syringe feeding science selective recovery mix. He has only had about 5 or 6 poops since we've been home.
My question is:- how long will it be before he is back to eating food voluntarily, or should I take him to the emergency vet? Emeprid injection was at about 11.45 today.

Hi, I'm no expert, so hope someone else comes along. Is he eating hay? Is he taking the syringe food? Maybe try offering him a selection of different things to see if anything will entice him. It is my understanding from past experience that guineas need to be constantly eating and pooping, so keep up with the syringe feeding and I hope something comes out the other end soon. Sorry, not much help, but fingers crossed for you and your pig.

Sorry to hear your piggie is unwell. Likely thing is the not eating & signs of pain are due to a health problem. Did the vet give any indication what this might be? You definitely need to keep syringe feeding, I aim for every 4 or 5 hours really. Was your vet a guinea (exotics) vet or just general? In this situation I would really get to an experienced guinea vet asap.

Best wishes to your piggie

Poor piggie. Massage his tummy - this will help if he is suffering with any gas. Did the vet say he suspected bloat?
The injection should last around a day, if he is still not pooing you'll need to go back to the vets. If it is gas causing the bloat then massage regularly, syringe feed and try to tempt him with hay. The vet can give you some emeprid to give orally otherwise known as metachlopromide to give at home if he is still not pooing.
Let us know how he gets on, hopefully the gut stim will kick in soon and he'll start pooing more. Sorry if this is not written great, I'm typing it on my phone.

One of our pigs suffers with bloat and we've found that rubbing her tummy gently in a clockwise direction helps stimulate her, we also have a vibrating seat that we put her on as the movement gets things moving. We limit her nuggets as one vet told us they can sometimes cause problems. We make sure she has loads of hay and fresh water and although fresh food is not ideal with bloat we want to encourage her to eat so give her small quantities of food we know doesnt cause her a problem - romaine lettuce and cucumber. Fluffy is have an attack today and we think it was caused by celery last night. You can feel bloat as their poor little tummies feel tight like a drum, the skin is tightly stretched with little movement. Hope all is well.

Thank you, I'm not sure if it is bloat, his belly doesn't seem swollen or tight. He has just had a couple of poops and a wee, so things are improving (hopefully). I have spoken to the vet and have arranged an appointment for 07.30 tomorrow. I am trying to tempt him with food, but it seems as though he can't be bothered to eat.

Edit *He's now pooping, and is eating by himself, but not as much as I would like*

Been to the vets again. Have had emeprid injection, and B12 injection. Now happily eating (and pooping). I'm emotionally exhausted ;-)

I had this last week with my wee maxi.. very disturbing.. it was about 3 - 4 days before eating actual food... i kept on giving the rescue recover even after she started eating hay.. maxi had a painkiler which i think helped.. poor wee soul.. just been in your position, thoughts n best wishes..
