Hi all

I got a phone call from my friend today who asked me to go and look at her piggie as he seemed lethargic and wasn't eating very much. These are her first piggies and are absolutely spoilt rotten.

Unfortunately, I think the piggie has been poorly for longer than she realised. I suggested he saw the vet today and all credit to her she didn't hesitate in taking him to the vets (at a cost of £145)

To cut a long story short, he's got a URI. His eyes are a little crusty and he's got a runny bottom where he's not been eating any long fibre. He's been eating his veggies which has luckily kept him hydrated.

He had a Baytril injection. He's also got oral Baytril, Fucithalmic for his eyes, probiotic and Critical Care/Science Recovery to build up his fibre.

I've shown her how to syringe feed him and showed her how to apply the eye ointment and have said that if she feels she can't do it tomorrow, I'll bring him (and his brother) here so that I can care for him for the week.

Is there anything I've forgotten. He's really really poorly - I think that perhaps someone more experienced would have realised that he needed a vet sooner but it genuinely wasn't due to lack of care or concern but lack of knowledge.

I'm really worried for him :...

Sending vibes x

I know how you are feeling.

I have a piggy named fudge and at the moment he is not at all well. I am worried about him.
He has been on Baytril for 9 days now and not eating much.

He is eating some cucumber and a bit of hay. His poops are not hard.
I went back the vet to get some recovery on Saturday and i just can not get it down him.

I am phoning the vet tomorrow morning to see if they provide a service were they will take him in for a few days to make sure he gets this recovery down him.

I am not bothered about paying for his stays as i think they will have more skills than me to feed him.

I am just hoping that they will do this for me. If not i am going to phone around other vets to see if they provide this service.(If my vets do not do this and i find another vet that will i will be changing my vet to the one that provides this service). I think they will as i have used this vet for 25yrs and have been a very loyal customer.

I hope your piggie gets over his illness and i am praying mine does. He is only 12 months old.

I can not believe that he is this ill. They are kept indoors in a C&C Cage, have the best of everything. Never go without food or hay or treats. I have spent a fortune on these little boys.

Just can not believe that some people do not look after thier animals and they never have a days illness and my boy is so ill.

I know how you feel - it's such a worry isn't it.

I'm so proud of my friend. She's never syringe fed an animal before but after showing her yesterday and explaining how to do it successfully, she fed him on her own this morning. She said he took it quite happily - p'raps it's because he's so poorly.

It might be an idea to ask if there is anyone locally that would be able to come round and helpful. Which town do you live in ?

When my precious Bette was poorly I cried so much and felt like such a failure nothing can prepare you for actually having to syring feed a piggy, it wasn't until she was so poorly I just had to do it and get it into her. Sadly she had alot more going on than an infection and passed away.

Good luck to your little ones, glad they have such loving owners. xx
