This morning when I awoke to feed the pigs. I found one of them lying down not moving while the other one was squeaking confused. I'm don't know what to do one of them is gone. I took it out of the cage and it broke my heart to find its mother searching for her. Do I get a new partner immediately or wait a week or two? I greatly miss the little pup. Before she died she has been acting a little less afraid letting me touch her, carrying her. But she stayed in her wooden tunnel much more the usual and wasn't bouncing around. Was it a disease that killed her or..? I'm going to do a deep wash once I come home and searching for more and more answers.

Hi and welcome!

I am very sorry for your unexpected loss and the shock!

Please bring mum indoors and have her vet checked.

We cannot tell you what has happened apart from that is must have been likely suddenly and expectedly, like a heart attack or a stroke. Only a post-mortem examination at the vet may give you the answers you are looking for.

Here are our tips on what you can do for your bereaved piggy: Looking After A Bereaved Guinea Pig

So sorry for your loss.
It’s important for you and your surviving piggy that you have time to grieve.
It’s great that even in your sadness you are thinking of her wellbeing and need of companionship.
Sadly sudden and unexpected deaths happen and we have to cope with them. I lost a piggy in similar circumstances and it is hard.
Be kind to yourself.

So sorry for your loss. When you get a new piggy should be guided by your remaining piggy first and you second. On occasion piggies can grieve very hard and stop eating, if this happens companionship is vital and I would hurry to find her a friend. If not then you can relax a little and take your time in searching. For me I have been lucky in the only time I was left with one she got lovely but it didn't make her ill so I was able to search for the right friend as I was worried that I might have been "trying to replace her".

Sadly, the girlie has been wandering around her cage squeaking since I left for school. I have been looking for a partner since I came home. I adopted the girl and the gave up the father who was supposed to be a girl from a friend who couldn't take care of them anymore that's how I ended up the baby. The poor baby is gone and the closest shelter that has pigs is an hour away. She has been picking at her food a bit and left pieces of food which for her is quite unusual, but would eat it all if someone pets her. I gave her some cucumber so she would quiet down a little for some time so I could finish up my work. So that's all I have currently on her. And will monitor here hourly.

Your piggy is grieving too in her own way.
Keep an eye on her and if she’s still not eating then step in with some syringe feeding.
Most grieving piggies will get on with the business of surviving.
When my Merab was left alone she hardly ate for a couple of days but then started eating again.
She was quieter and more withdrawn until I was able to find 2 suitable companions to share her life with.

Sorry your piggie died and it takes a lot of emotional time to carry on
Your other piggie needs you and you get. Be Strong.

So sorry for your loss.

Sleep well little one

RIP little piggy

Update: She has been staying at the front of the cage, which breaks my heart. The closest shelter for pigs in an hour+ away. Everything just makes me feel terribly bad because shes alone with no one to talk to besides the whispers and cuddles from humans. I think it might be the best decision for me and her to buy one from pet chains.

I’m so sorry for your loss :soz:
Sweet dreams xx

She lived an amazing life with you. sending you huge hugs. she had the best possible life that you could have given her. RIP little one , sweet dreams honeyxxx

Sometimes you have to buy from a pet shop to help ease a lone guinea pigs grief. Best of luck.

Don't feel bad about not getting a rescue piggy. Try and see if the Pet Shop Chain you go to has a rescue centre in it. Then this may make you feel a bit better. Remember to quarantine your new piggy and then introduce in a neutral area.

I bought her a new grass mat and check out the pigs at my local petco. I found this beautiful calico looking one and a pure white one. I'm in love with their color schemes but when I first got Astro. I fell in love with her at first sight. I really liked them but I didn't feel that right click. For now I'll keep on my search!:luv:
