Any one know why my piggies have gone off eating the hay when put in the rack and would rather eat in when just put in a pile on the cage floor? Its the same hay out of the same bag!

They are probably too lazy! You could try some different hay (timothy or oat hay perhaps) to give them a change, although 2 of mine still eat their hay off the floor as well 98)

will try that thanks they get meadow hay at moment was thinking of getting the hay cubes from pampered piggies website when i put my next order in.

my two oldest pigs are large sows both around the 1kg mark have put them on a diet still getting veg just not as much

i tend to use different hay in the hay rack to what i use in the bottom of the cage. i use the herbage hay from pets at home in their hay rack and they love it! its timothy hay, with dandilions and things in. maybe give something like that a try? make a bit of a change from regular hay?

i use a different hay for eating and beding too, but my piggies also prefer to eat it from the floor, I top up their hay rack but they have been ignoring it, When i put it on the floor they are there in a shot. same hay, they just prefer it from the floor.

thats wierd lol. my piggies used to just eat from the floor as i dont think their last owner used hay racks, but they got used to using one after a while. they love that herbage hay too much to ignore it ;D

Guineas naturally eat from the ground, not reaching up. Try stuffing Chubes with the good hay and put Meadow hay in bags/boxes/piles on the floor. I also tie baling string round bundles of hay and tie it to the front mesh of the cage so that its just touching the floor but they can't trample on it ::)
Another good hay 'rack' is an upturned Fiddlestix so its like a manger.
The hay cubes don't have the same effect as hay does on the teeth and hay should always be available :)

i stuff toilet rolls too, and they do like this, I also get those plastic washing balls and stuff them with hay, so it sprouts out of the top, this works really well, they throw them around (mine don't chew the plastic)

thanks guys for your replys will let you know how I get on. have tried the toilet roll tube and they like that

I bought a hay rack too, and they didnt even look at the hay when I put it in there. I just replenish it on the floor of the cage now, and after a day or two whatever is there, I just scoop the whole lot out and replace with new stuff. I think putting it on the floor of the cage is better though, every time I do that mine popcorn around the cage, and go running through it, flinging it everywhere. They have so much fun when I put down fresh hay. Each time I go past the cage, I gather up the hay that has been moved around the cage and put it back in one place, and they go spreading it round the cage again. :D
