Piggies have put on weight after mite injections - why?

All my 8 sows (mum and 7 daughters) developed mites so I took them to the vets for ivorvectin jabs. It certainly killed the mites but oh dear, they all put on so much weight.

I spoke to the vet and he said its because it not only kills mites but kills any worms the pigs may have had therefore they tend to put on weight.

At first i was horrified my pigs had worms but I`ll never know.

This seemed an all `to easy` explanationn.

Anyone any other ideas?

a) mites can be a burden on the body, so he constant stress from the itchiness can lead to decreased appetite.

b) if your guinea pigs have been outside on grass, they can have well picked up worms (so tiny you can't see them); it is actually a legitimate explanation. I you want, you can worm regularly throughout the summer months. Worms (the variety that live in the guts), unfortunately, can settle in all mammals; guinea pigs are usually not as badly affected as other animals who have specific worms evolved to target them, but it takes only one bad patch of grass...
 
Thanx all and especially alisterpigs. `Run of the mill` vets are so overrated as `gods`. When it comes to piggy care they know precious little.

I trust Vedra from CCT who is the worlds leading expert on rodents (and especially piggies). In fact, she trains vets on rodentology.

My vet got this aspect right for once.
