as some of you know I'm planning to move in with my partner in the summer but before i can put my house up forsale the piggies have to move :( first.

the conservatory is now built and have put laminate flooring down, have white blinds on all the windows.

am having a radiator put in for the winter months.

what i need now is advice from those that keep their piggies in conservatories, i am worried sick about the summer and the heat.

i am looking into air conditioning. any advice or hints would be great.

am building the cage for the girls so any tips on that would be good

I dont even go in my conservatory in the summer and thats with air con on, no plants survive in there all my candles melt I sjut go in to open the doors and wondows,
the only time mine go in is if its a warm spring day and they have a bath they dry off wonderfully in there,
but they would cook in the summer

Ours are in the conservatory at the moment, but when spring comes we are buying a hutch and run for the garden - I think the conservatory would be like a cook house to be honest, but saying that air con or a fan on them might be ok :-\ I'm not sure really though. I think you can also buy cool slabs (not sure on the real name for them, but someone on here will know) for them to lie on and cool down ::)

Which way does your conservatory face? Does it have lots of windows that you can open? With a portable air-conditioning unit it could be ok especially if they can be out in runs on the lawn during the day then only back inside once it has cooled down a bit inthe evening.

My dad is and airconditioning engineer, buying a mobile air con unit is a money eater, we had one in the house a couple of years ago and our electric bill went sky high, and all the windows in the house have to be closed or you will not get the full benefit the chill, also air con unit produce a lot of dry air, you will have to be aware of the pigs eyes and respiratory systems.

Sorry to be so big headed but dads being doing it since before i was born so you do kinda pick up info as you grow.

Emma

But i would live in you conservatory i love the heat ;)

i don't know what the system is we looked at, it costs alot ;) but it's meant to keep the conservatory at a constant temp no matter what.

i will be at home more than what i am now, just gonna be working the mornings :)

mayb i shouldn't move and just keep them all here in the house ;D

cooling slabs sound good........................

in the summer my lot (who live outside) get frozen iceblocks... evenwhen theyre defrosted stanley the bunny snuggles up to them ;D

the slabs are ''chin chilla's'' you can get them from p@h , like a marbel slab...(my chins use them to pooh on :D) in warm weather i freeze loads of coke/squash bottles and put them I'm hutches cages every morning....dont know about air con , we did have one in work one year ..i would prefer a fan lol !
good luck :)

I would say no to a conservetory in the summer but in the cooler months they are ok, as when i had piggies when i was younger i had them indoors. One day in the summer we had builders in doing work they thought they would move the piggies into the conservetory while they did some work in the lounge they did open the double doors. When i got home from school i found them nearly lifeless they had heat stroke :'( i wrapped them up in damp towels and they pulled through luckily but i would never keep piggies in there in the summer because of this reason :)

now i'm all worried, don't know what i'l do. at the moment i have my piggies in house but where i am moving to isn't very big :( these units i enquired about are meant to keep the conservatory at what ever temp you set, be it hot or cold, :( 98) now i don't know what to do..........................

i'l have to do alot more research into these cooling systems, there meant to be able to give out heat as well and keep the air right if you know what i mean? they are a unit that you have to fit, they are not mobile......................

think it's research time, thought i had it all figured out :-\ blinds, tinted roof, windows, knew this move wouldn't be easy

we've got blinds and roof blinds and air con and a double door and 2 open windows it still gets like a bake house in there, what about a small shed, might be cheaper then paying out for an air con they do run up a hugh electric bill I agree

I would say it depends on which direction the conservatory is facing. Our conservatory faces North and is actually in permanant shade in the summer - so yes, it gets warmer in the summer than it is in the spring but it certainly doesn't get hot like some do. In fact we put a thermometer out there and it isn't any warmer than the rest of the house. We have a roof 'window' as well as normal windows which are kept open on particularly hot days. Now, I don't actually keep my piggys in the conservatory but after baths when they need to come in to dry off, I set them up pens in the conservatory and it is fine. I think it really depends on the direction it faces and how much direct sunshine it gets - and you would have to keep a close eye and move them if the temperature started to get too hot or too cold for them.

I would agree - if its not in direct sunlight at the hottest part of the day then it would get quite warm in there but not cooking.

that plus other measures of keeping cool (the ice bottles mentioned, fans, cold damp towels hanging on the side of their cage, cold bricks and marble slabs, etc), and your piggies would be alright I think.

I would just put them outside in the summer- a nice big secure run with some water proof shelter to hide in, obviously in the shade. Alot cheaper than buying air con & its so nice to see a piggy sniffing the air 8)

I wouldn't keep them in a conservatory at all - even if its not in direct sunlight all the day it only takes a short time for it to get very warm, too warm for piggies, and the cost of keeping it cool would be expensive. We have an old conservatory with blinds on the roof and sides, but even that is getting too warm now, and its not in direct sun all day.

Not worth it, keep them outside in the summer.
