Evening folks!

Okay so not a very happy topic to discuss or start...but i know piggie passing is part of owning and caring for our pigs.

With the recent fungal outbreak, Harvey-Pig, who has a very, very special place in my heart wasn't very well in himself and this was awful to see he's normally so cheerful and bouncy :( Harvey-pig is three now, and will be four next summer...so now I'm wondering how long have your piggies lived? And who was your oldest?

I know Percy-Roo (rescue) was around 5 years old when he passed i had him just under a year, in quote of my vet 'a old pig who has been through a lot in his short life'.' Has any of your rescues lived a long life?

Sorry for the morbidness, i know piggles can live to 8 but is this the norm?

On average our piggies have been 5-6 years old. Willow was 5, marley was 4 3/4 :(, Tyson was 6, Pirate was 5 1/2, pickwick was 6 & 9 months, Heston was 4 1/2. We've had a few that have passed away younger but all of those have had serious illness.

I've had one of my piggies make it to 7, he was the results of a buy one get one free from a pet shop pregnancy. Most of mine have been between 4-5 though...I've had 7 piggies make it to 6 years. :-)

i lost my first baby just short of his first birthday, the second one at 3 1/2 and his mate a month or two later at the same age.

I'm feeling nervous as Stan & Oscar are round that age....eek

Love the new hutch x

My first piggies didn't make 5 but my last pair were 6 and nearly 9 when they passed and they came from unknown background :)

Our first four girls didn't quite make it to 5. Noughet and Sherbet were pts due to cancer, Lily's time had come but she was pts because I didn't want her to have a long drawn out passing and Ophelia passed naturally in my arms. Midge is celebrating her 5th birthday today, she will be our oldest pig so far.

Our first Flower went at 1 (fall related), Sunshine at 3 + 7 mths (lymphoma around kidneys), Flower Junior at 2 + 8 mths (URI induced heart attack), Moon 2 + 10 mths (recurrent URI) and Midnight at 6 mths (stroke, was always a sickly pig).

Although this is a bit of a morbid thread, It is amazing how much love oozes from the page when you read it..xoxo

I lost my youngest girl Madam prematurely at just 18 months. She wasn't eating & an X-ray showed a growth on her gut. She went downhill overnight after the X-ray which was done under anaesthetic. She is never far from my thoughts.

I have lost two piggies before the age of one. Chamomile (the ginger satin quite a few people on here knew) and Pumpkin. Both died due to genetic problems - heart attack and fitting resepctively. That was horrendous, the thought that they hadn't lived long enough even though they did have a lot of fun in their short lives.

I lost Columbia aged 6 and a bit, after cancer for nearly two years which hardly slowed her down at all I have to say. I lost Magenta aged 5 to a back molar abcess that wasn't caught in time, I still kick myself over that one. And I really hurt whenever I think about my darling whiteness Carmilla, aged about 4, who died from a bladder stone and hid the symptoms so very well from me. She got her picture into the Guinea Pig Magazine just after she died and it was fantastic seeing her in print. Columbine died from cancer again, aged about 5ish, she lived a very full and happy life with the illness for about a year as well. Carmina had an abcess, but the xray showed all her molar roots growing down into her throat and that was simply too much for the poor little girl. (I suppose that one was genetic too really) She was about 5 as well.

I agree that this is an odd thread, but the love we have for our piggies leaps off the page. I'm going to give my girls some lettuce now in memory of all the piggies that have departed from this house and all the piggies mentioned on here.

I've had lots of piggies over the years but I've had two I've to eight and two pass at 18 months. The average for me seems to be around 5-6 :)

Fluffy: 1.5 (Genetic problems)
Pigzilla: 2 ish (Genetic Problems)
Bubble: 5 (unknown cause, End of life?)
Squeak 7 (PTS kidney failure)
Rex: 9 (PTS, Teeth issues, Rapidly loosing weight and low quality of life)

Smudgie: 2 (Unknown cause, poor breeding?)
Mojo 3 and still kicking ^_^

My first piggies were eugine,he passed around the age of 7+ yrs old so he lived a long life, had surgery for a lump removal just under his chin and lived for around 2 yrs after! I think cant remember as it was a while ago and i was a kid, I'm not sure about sweeps age as i resuced him,but he and eugine died within a day of each other,it was in that year where a massive call back for hay as it had a poisionus plant in it,un beknown to anyone and thousands of animals died in the uk from horses to hamsters, rabbits and piggies, any animal that might be given hay, i was beyond greif to say the lest!
And mr piggles who i only just lost he was put to sleep as he was a very very poorly piggy!, he was around 8mths old! Way to young.......

I lost my first piggie Angel at 6 months due to respiratory problems. (never bought from that pet store since)
Gina was 3 1/2 PTS because of a respiratory problem.
Kimmi was 4 PTS after problems after a GA.
Truffle was 5. I believe it was natural causes old age it happened so suddenly and she was squeaking/eating playing. Just woke up that next morning and she was gone.

Then we have my 3 piggies. Zee who is 5-6, Fudge who is 5 and Leo who's about 1 1/2 maybe more.

Wow! There are some old grandma and grandpa piggles out there. :)

Woolly and Bingo were both about 5 1/2, both PTS, Woolly with heart disease and Bingo with a growth in her face. Rory and Winnie are now around that age so I'm watching them like a hawk!

We lost Gizmo at 2yrs and 9 months due to heart failure, it was very sad as he was probably the quirkiest of all my pigs and we still miss him now :'(

My oldest pig was only over 4 and I can't remember who it was, I actually think it was Jake!
One of my mums pigs... BARNEY... he is 6 1/2!

My much loved marshmellow passed at 4 and a half, she was a rescue guinea pig along with her two sisters and it is by far the best thing I have ever done in life. Giving them a loved home!

Bon Bon and Biscuit (Marshmellows sisters) are still with me and going strong despite one being born blind and the other having to have her eye removed due to an awful cist behind it!

My other 3 ladies from a few years back lived great lives Tara and Misty were 6 (almost 7) when they passed, Misty was 8. They were from a local pet store.

I can honestly say that if I can ever expand my Guinea family I will go to a rescue home, the best feeling in the world.

My rabbit (Truffles) is also from a rescue centre and they all fill my life with love! Amazing!

They certainly can live up to 8 years.

Mine is currently 8 years and 2 months old.

My previous rescue piggy passed away at around 4 years old, his age was unknown due to from neglect background.

It really depends on their health unfortunately, suppose it's no difference to us and any animals really. As long as they;'ve had the best life they could possibly have, that;s the most important thing.

My oldest was mr frodo, he got to be 9 years old with no illnesses whatsoever for his entire life and passed in the night.

King David will be 8 in June, you wouldn't think it to look at him though.

Patch was 4 when he passed (we lost his cagemate at 18 months due to serious illness), Hope died from a brain tumor at 7 months, Gizmo had a seizure at 2 1/2 and poor little Gatsby (who was a sickly little thing) passed at only 9 weeks old. Zell was about 15 months old when we lost him, he got spooked by a loud noise upstairs and fell out of my friend's arms
