Hey, guys. Strange new behavior I’ve witnessed in my piggy named Button.

He has a 2 x 4 C&C cage, shared with his brother, Ziptie. I feed them veggies 2 x a day and pellets in the afternoon. I’ve noticed that Button has started chewing the bars whenever I approach the cage with his food.

He never used to do this in his store bought cage, probably because it has thicker bars. I try to stop him all the time. I’m wondering if it has to do with boredom or excitement?

they have plenty of toys, and while Button does sometimes chew them, I don’t see him engaging in enrichment nearly as often as Ziptie. He mostly lounges in his hammock. I know Ziptie is more energetic, but I’m worried Button could be chewing his bars when I’m not there. I’ve never seen him do it, but who knows.

He doesn’t like wood blocks, chews, sticks, basically anything but hay. Not even cardboard. I don’t want his teeth to be ruined — I know it can cause damage when hamsters chew their bars out of stress or boredom, and I assume the same for cavvies. What can I do to make him engage in healthy chewing activities? I’m pretty sure he only chews the bars when I’m bringing food because he’s excited, but I still want to increase his value of enrichment nonetheless.

They can bar chew to get attention - if he mostly does it when you are bringing food, then that is the connection.
Piggies usually aren’t interested in toys but as long as he is eating lots of hay, then that’s great.

a 2x4 is the minimum size for two boars, 2x5 is recommended. If they are fine with it, then that’s ok, but it’s just something to bear in mind if they have space related issues if they are teenagers.

Ooh, I accidentally mistook it. My original plan was 2x4 but I had enough space for a 2x5 so that’s the correct size!

I have had several bar chewers over the years, and Ruby is an absolute nightmare.
She does it for attention and treats, and it has nothing to do with being hungry or bored!
