Hello all,

I'm new to this site. I was wondering if anyone could help me. I lost Jesse today my female pig. She was 4.

I cleaned her and her sister out yesterday. And she seemed fine. This morning I got up and she was half dead. When I pickd her up she bit me. By lunch time she was gone.

I had no sign of illness. All I can see is that her mouth area was wet.

I feel so bad and I'm not sure what happened. Her sister Josie is all alone now. Does anyone know what could have happened?

Terribly sorry to hear your sad news. It's really difficult to say what might have happened, but piggies, being prey animals in the wild, are very good at hiding their illnesses until it's sadly often too late. How had she been eating? If she was wet around her mouth it MAY have been problems with her teeth, although this is not certain to be the case in any way. How is her sister?

Josie is very frightened I have put a small cuddly toy in her cage just to help her so she doesnt feel alone.

Jesse was eating fine I think she always went to the food bowl but she felt very skinny this morning I could feel her bones....all the greens they had were always gone so I am baffled!.

I have buried her in the garden where they used to play. Hope she is ok there.

Sorry to hear this. As above - unfortunately piggies often don't show much in the way of symptoms even if they're quite poorly.

I hope the remaining piggy is ok - keep an eye on her to check she's still eating and drinking ok, as they can sometimes pine for their lost friends

I'm so sorry for your loss. Just keep an eye on you piggie and it might be a good idea to weigh her once a week and keep a record of it.

Thanks for your replies, I will definatley keep an eye on Josie, my other piggys are all fine...old but fine I just feel bad she was the youngest and now she is gone :(

I agree. Weighing weekly is one of the the best ways to discover a problem early. Sometimes a guinea pig with tooth problems will 'hang out' by the food bowl but be unable to eat, so the other one snaffles it all! However, as I've said before, I'm no expert and not even attempting to diagnose.

Good thinking with the cuddly toy. Also does Josie live outside? If so, is there anyway you could bring her in for a bit?

No she lives in one of my stables, all my rabbits and guniea pigs do during the winter they are due outside next week for the summer months.

I will keep my eye on all my cavvies.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. It is so sad to lose one without knowing what happened but unfortunately guinea pigs are too good at hiding anything.

4 is quite a good age for a guinea pig. Many of them gradually shut down, even though they are continuing to eat right until the end. She may have died of "old age ", a stroke or heart attack. The wetness around the mouth of a dying pig is fairly common, it seems to result from an inability to swallow. There is nothing you could have done. Whilst her death was unexpected and a shock, she had a good length and quality of life with a quick and peaceful death, which is all any of us could ask for.

Welcome to the forum :), and i'm so so sorry to hear about your little Jesse 8...8...8...
Sounds like you know what you're doing xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>
As everyone has said, piggies are so dam good at hiding their illnesses ............ it's their nature.
I did the same thing when our last piggy lost his mate, the stuffed toy does seem to help a little xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Good luck love xxxxxxxxxxxx

Welcome to the forum, I am so sorry it is under such sad circumstances. A sudden death without any warning is fairly common with these creatures. All you can do is love and care for them to the best of your knowledge and abilities, cherish each day. Sadly, you never know when you will lose them.
Rest well, little Jesse. xx

So sorry sorry to hear about your girl. I recently lost a sow who had shown no signs of illness in the morning and when I came home from work she was dead. If my piggy had been ill she was hiding it very well as she appeared to be in perfect health. Its just the way sometimes that the piggies pass very suddenly. Thoughts are with you during this sad time....

So sorry to hear about your piggy. 8...8...8... It is always a shock & so hard when we lose our piggies - no matter how old they are or how long we have had them.

Try not to worry about why she died - let yourself grieve & give extra love & support to her sister. Know that she is running free over the rainbow bridge, being looked after by all the piggies who have gone before.

Hold onto your memories. Give the other piggy lots of love & extra special hugs at this tough time.

My manly quintet send hugs & squeaks your way
