Hey guys.

I'm just a bit worried for my piggie right now. she's been with me for nearly 9 years (8 and a bit) and recently she hasnt been eating as much. Ive been feeding her mainly carrots and celery since the beginning with the occasional slice of grape and apple and grass so that shouldnt really be the issue should it?
so today when it was feeding time (normally she squeals when she's hungry or hears plastic rustling) she was pretty quiet, and when i gave her the food she wasnt really biting like normal. however once i gave her a bit of apple she just dug into it like old piggies do. what should i do now, feeding wise. i know apple has too much sugar for daily consumption for piggies so i cant just feed her apples every day can i?

Hi, does she have hay and dry food too?

It sounds like she is struggling to eat, this could indicate dental issues or another health issue. I would get her checked by a vet.

If you are in the UK we have a recommended vets locator.

we have her pellets in a bowl for her. she hasnt eaten much from that either. :( I'm in australia so that wouldnt really help . but why does she go for the apple but not the celery and carrots ;l

It may be because it is sweet and possibly a bit softer than the carrot and celery. Is she eating hay?

No... we've never given her hay before ...

Ok. Hay is supposed to be 90% of their diet but I know some people in Australia don't feed it if they have grass. I would get her teeth checked by a vet and also try her with some hay.

mhmm okay. I'm banking on teeth issues. but ill try to get some hay as soon as possible. and do you by any chance know how many guinea pig years are in 9 human years

There are other Australian members on here who may be able to help too.

Not too sure but I think it is a lot. She's a really good age.

okay then . thanks alot for the suggestions!

I had the same problem and it was dental problems I would go to vets and defenetely give her hay!

Wow, what an amazing age. Could be dental I agree, introducing hay will help with teeth and keeping thm worn down. Please let us know how she gets on?
Welcome to forum by the way, lots of healing and positive vibes for your little girl.

The local pet store was out of hay today :l. so ive just given her more grass and some celery and carrot. she's eating but just slower than normal but then you dont really expect grannies to eat fast
i'll see how she goes in the following days ^_^

Guys I'm sorry to say... she passed away last night :'(

I'm sorry for your loss, still 8 years that's really good for a piggy your lucky if they last 5 years anyway hope you have lots of happy memories don't blame yourself either she was older and unfortunately it was her time but she had a good long life and maybe you will one day be able to love and forever home another lil piggy

Sorry for your loss, but sounds like she had a long and happy life with you - sweet dreams (old) girl

Thats very sad to hear :( It does sound like she had a great life though, and a very long one at that. Popcorn free x
