Hi all,

Our piggy, Twix, had blood in her urine and was squealing when she went for a wee. The vet diagonesed a UTI and we were prescribed 0.35ml of Baytril twice a day and 0.35ml of Metacam once a day. We also asked for a probiotic (Fibreplex) which we've been giving twice a day.

She's been picky with food but has been eating hay, picking at her nuggets and had some fresh food every day (especially partial to coriander and little gem lettuce). I've also made her 'porridge' with her nuggets in the hope that would be easier to eat. Her weight has fluctuated between 850g to 900g over the week. (We adopted her and know her to be about 5 1/2 years old so not sure if that's a good weight or not at the moment).

The blood and squealing has stopped but her belly seems very gassy, her poops are smelly and a few are strung together. We're going to the vets tomorrow. They have an open clinic in the morning so aim to be first in line but is there anything I can do in the meantime to keep her going?

My main questions are:

1. Do I continue to feed fresh food if she wants it? Is there anything I should avoid or should I just give her whatever she wants? I've also made a pellet sludge to syringe feed. Is that okay?

2. She has had some water from her bottle but I've syringe fed her some water too. How much is too much?

3. When I see the vet tomorrow is there any meds I should request? I've heard of metaclopramide(?) for gut movement. Is that right?

She's such a sweetheart. It's breaking my heart to see her so down. I need her little cheeky spirit to come back.

Any help will me much appreciated and thanks in advance.

Gemma

Sounds like the baytril has upset tummy a little .

When does her course of anti biotics end? Good news the crying and the blood has stopped hopefully uti has cleared.

Yes I would ask for metachlpromide as you said which is a gut stun to keep things moving, possibly Zantac also as it works on the other part of the guy.

Is she eating hay?

Pellet sludge is fine to syringe feed if needed.

Thank you for your replies sport_billy. The antibiotics ended yesterday so we were really hoping we'd be on the up by now.

Great, thanks. I'll make sure we're given both and a painkiller too.

She is eating hay luckily. She's done really well with it today so just hoping that continues.

Back down to 1.196kg this morning despite feeding at midnight, 2.30am and 5am but he seems brighter this morning and had a little parsley and hay before the vets and we syringe fed him again afterwards. Hydration is fine and no obvious discomfort. They offered Metaclopramide but were 50:50 and I am not clear that he needs that. Said we'd see how he gets on and can go back later today. Appointment with the specialist is tomorrow late afternoon so still holding that.

One concern is the regular croaky noise he's been making. I've not been able to record it properly yet. His heart and lungs sound fine according to the vet.
