Hi everyone
Today we took squeak (our male guinea pig) to get neutered, sadly the vet rang me and informed me that although he is breathing on his own he has not woken up from the surgery which happened 7 hours ago
He's currently in an incubator with oxygen and being monitored constantly.
Has anyone else had this happen to them and what happened to piggy?
Your thoughts and experiences are greatly welcomed.

Oh no thats so sad :( how old is the piggy?

Can they assess his pupils for position/response to light? If he was a healthy piggy there should be no reason for such a slow recovery :(

He's 18 months old, we bought 2 at the same time thinking they were both girls but it turns out that 1 if them was a male due to an unforseen pregnancy.
So to avoid a 2nd pregnancy we decided to separate them but they were always looking for each, we had to keep their cages next to each other so that they could rub noses
The vet is great she's doing everything she can, she's even taking him home tonight so that she can monitor him through the night.

BIG HUGS

I am very sorry. It is very rare; more common is for the piggy to pass away while under, often at the end of the operation or to pass away while still in recovery. I had that happen several times with piggies of mine.

All you can do is hope, but if it is the kindest thing to let him pass, then please be brave enough to do so. Please remind yourself that you have opted for the operation to give Squeak the happiest of boar lives.

I am really sorry, keeping everything crossed for him. Nothing is unfortunately without risks so please do not blame yourself should the worst happen. Please keep us updated, sending hugs

Goodness me, how shocking.

I'm terribly sorry to read this post. I haven't heard of this, but nevertheless, I'm sure it can happen.

Hope he recovers.
x

Oh no you must be so worried for him. Poor little piggy, fingers crossed he recovers.

I am really sorry- how scary! Any idea what kind of anesthesia was used? Fingers crossed and hope he makes a good recovery. I know that anesthesia can be touchy with small animals. ((HUGS.))

The vet got in touch with me through the night, I'm afraid to say that squeak passed away.
