Hi there! My piggy has not been eating hay for several days, but does eat pellets and veggies. I took him to the vet thinking it was his teeth, but they said his molars looked good. They clipped his front teeth a bit. I was hoping this would fix the problem, but it has not. What can I do? Thank you!

@ilnewkirk I suggest finding a vet more experienced with guinea pigs. I can't understand how an issue with front teeth would stop a pig eating hay.

Clipping front teeth is not recommended as it can break or chip the teeth and it's usually done by a vet will less experience with pigs.

If you add your location to your profile we may be able to recommend a vet for you.

Is your pig just not eating hay in your presence? Have you tried different hays? Have you tried cutting it into smaller pieces?

What about fresh grass. If he eats this try mixing some in with the hay. It could also be that the piggy doesn't like this particular hay. Could have a smell or texture he dislikes so try buying elsewhere.

Is he maybe filling up on veggies? I find if I've been a bit over generous with other food they don't eat as much hay. Like when my son gave them a huge bowl of nuggets because he didn't listen to my instructions!

Something very similar happened recently with my pig that turned out to be a lot more serious than refusing hay. When a pig first begins to feel sick or off hay is usually the thing that they stop eating first. Is your pig acting normal aside from not eating hay? Does he lay down or does he sit all fluffed up because that could be an indicator of pain. Is he pooping normally?

Guinea-pigs have back teeth to grind down their food. The teeth are probably not wearing equally. I'd take the pig to an exotic vets to have the teeth filed down - I've had this done previously.
