hi
I am wondering if anyone might have experienced anything similar that can point me in the right direction please. I’ve searched the internet and the answers that came up from this forum but nothing quite fits his symptoms.
I have two 18 month old boars. Last Thursday I noticed small poops so checked them both over and found a lump in the neck of one. Went to the vets Friday. Lump was syringed - it was full of puss and a sample was sent away to be tested to see what antibiotics would work. Full clean bill of health apart from that and no mobility issues.
Fast forward to Sunday the same pig suddenly stopped using his back legs and was dragging himself like a slug. Emergency vet appt - no trauma or injury ( he lives inside, nothing to climb on. I have a camera and nothing out of the ordinary seen on any movement activations)
They said he was cold, struggling to maintain temperature and dehydrated and suspected the weakness in legs was due to general weakness or a bacterial infection. He was admitted, given subcutaneous fluids every hour, started on metacam and antibiotics. He came home last night for me to continue critical care and he was back this morning. He continues to eat as normal and is maintaining weight.
Went back this morning to the vet - they said his back legs now had feeling but front legs didn’t - he wasn’t responding to pain.
He had an x ray - all spine, joints, legs, head etc all checked and nothing found. The sample sent from the abcess has come back showing no bacterial infection.
He’s had a steroid injection and is to continue on antibiotics and critical care and is back tomorrow. The vet has said the next 24-36 hours is crucial and he needs to start moving his legs again if he is ever going to. But they have absolutely no idea what it could be.
Could anyone please suggest what might be causing this and what I can do to help him? The vet said he isn’t in any pain which is why I’m giving him a chance as the last thing I want him to do is suffer :(
He can feel his legs and if I hold him he can weight bear through his back legs onto my hand. He can also push from my hand and push himself to crawl towards but he doesn’t move his back legs forward to Make the walking motion if that makes sense.

So sorry you and your piggy are going through this! I have no advice to offer but wanted to wish you both the best of luck, and pray he recovers 🙏❤️

Hi there what an awful worry for you, well done for taking him to the vets promptly. Are you doing daily weight checks to make sure he is not losing any weight? Is his cage mate perfectly healthy as far as you can tell? 💐

I hope your piggy gets better soon 🙏 It might take a few weeks for him to improve. I wonder if it is calcified bulla syndrome.

Hello and welcome to the forum. I’m so sorry your piggy is so poorly. I have experience of an abscess under the chin but not the paralysis. A very good antibiotic for abscesses is Zithromax. It did stop my piggys appetite while he was on it. He had a 6 week course. I hope he improves soon.

Sending you hugs and healing vibes to your piggy ❤️

If he is still very young (18 months) it's worth hanging on. His loss of movement might resolve and I don't think it is painful in itself, although he might need a bit of cleaning below. You could also gently move and exercise his legs to try to reactivate them possibly.

I want to give him as much time as possible to recover as it came on so suddenly with no obvious cause of trauma and nothing has been detected on swabs or x rays. He isn’t in pain or suffering but I just feel bad that he can’t move.
He’s on bathmats and hay and I move him regularly and clean up where he’s been but he seems relatively clean in himself. I try to move his legs every time I pick him up too.
I can only hope it resolves itself as quickly as it came on I guess

Testing his front legs for pain might be tricky as guinea pigs often freeze under pressure, just a thought.

My boy became paralyzed with an ear infection and started walking after a couple weeks of antibiotics. The vet didn't see the infection initially on the x-ray
