Hi

Fudge who is 2 developed diarrhoea last the weekend. Vet couldn't find anything wrong (temperature normal) and suggested just hay and pellets.

It has got better but keeps reoccurring in loose poos, however no way as bad as it was. This is once we try and re introduce peppers in a small amount.

We then decided to stay completely with hay and pellets for a longer time. Now poos have become really small and she yelped last night while doing her business.

We are going back to the vets tomorrow. But wouldn't mind your advise.

Many Thanks

Barry

Please have a float or lab test of the poos done, so you can see whether there is a bug causing the issues. She may also need an x-ray to see whether there is something pressing on the guts or there is an obstruction in the guts that is causing the pain.

The small poos indicate that your girl is not eating enough. Please start topping her up with syringe feeding asap and also watering her. Weigh her daily at the same time to monitor her food intake. I would recommend to get fibreplex and also use a pinch of probiotics twice daily to help prop up the guts in addition to fibrous recovery food. The more fibre you can get into her the better; just hay and pellets may not be enough, especially if she is in discomfort.

Could you please add your country, state or UK county to your details, so we can tailor any advice and recommendations to what is available and doable where you are. We have members from all over the world, and our advice varies accordingly. Please click on your username on the top bar, then go to personal details and scroll down to location. Thank you!
We have got a piggy savvy vet locator on the top bar, but can provide a link to recommended vets in other countries if wished.

Ditto to what Wiebka has said ,
Tests can take a few days for the results so the sooner you see you vet the better

I agree with Wiebke. Small poos mean not enough throughput so syringe feeding is essential and Fibreplex is worth trying too. Get back to the vet for further investigation. Hope she picks up soon!

Wiebke has pretty much said all that can be. Monitor her weight, top her up with syringe feeds if need be and some extra water. Get her poo tested and potentially an X-ray at a later point if she is not making improvements.

When you do eventually reintroduce veg, do it just one at a time, this way you will be able to tell if she is particularly sensitive to one.

Been to the Vet again and nothing obvious.

Shes going tomorrow and will be given gas as its possible she has a problem with her teeth. If she is a sleep the Vet can have a proper look.

I wouldn't think that this is specifically a dental issue. If this problem persists I would be looking into parasite screening (sending poo away to see if any parasites at all). Also taking X-rays to see if there is anything obvious in her abdomen and failing these I would be taking some blood. No reason why not to rule out dental issues. She may well not be biting you hard, piggies are often gentle, I have several who nibble my fingers gently when they want home for a wee.

Hope she feels better soon. Let us know how she gets on.

Hi,

An update. Been to the vets and had her back teeth cut. They had sharp bits which the vet believes would cause issue. Not eating enough pellets = small poops = pain..

Anyway she is home and eating pellets like mad...not sure if its an effect of the gas, but she seems much happier and eating faster than she would normally be able to.

Fingers crossed, but time will tell

Thanks

Barry

That may be why, unless she was given a long lasting pain killer at the vets. Could you speak to them tonight at all?

We have given her liquid pellets... She seems very bright and she's not been like this for a week.

I don't think she is in pain, she will let me tickle her chin.

Will get her back to the vets tomorrow...

So she could eat immediately after having dental work, but can't now? Is that correct? If that is the case then it could be a reaction to the anaesthetic or a pain issue.

Correct. She ate loads when she came home... She was okay with pellets and hay. But as time went by you could tell she was having issues. She was biting the syringe with her front teeth while feeding...

It sounds like a pain issue, as if it was dental then she wouldn't have been able to eat initially. She isn't getting bloated is she? I have had a few dental piggies end up with bloat, due to being able to eat lots of veg again after having dental work, and it's obviously been too much for them, after not being able to eat much prior to the dental work.

Spoken to the Vet today, and say they should have given us something to place in the water to help with the pain, but they had run out...

They ordered some yesterday, so should be able to collect tonight. The Vet we use is a one man band. He is great, but he's got someone standing in for him as he is on holiday..

Is it normal to require pain relief after dental work, or have we been unlucky?

The mouth can be sore after a dental (especially if the teeth were overgrown previously) so I think it is pretty normal. My Tim had a dental last week and it was recommended that we keep him on it for a few days at least.

I have not heard of a pain relief that is put in the water though. It is normal for a vet to just give Metacam, either the dog or cat versions.
