Specialist Piggy Poos / Persistent Diarrhea

Spoken to the Vet today, and say they should have given us something to place in the water to help with the pain, but they had run out...

They ordered some yesterday, so should be able to collect tonight. The Vet we use is a one man band. He is great, but he's got someone standing in for him as he is on holiday..

Is it normal to require pain relief after dental work, or have we been unlucky?
Pain relief to put in water? I am sorry, but they really don't seem very guinea pig savvy. Did they say what they had actually done to the teeth? Were they causing any soft tissue trauma? Were they trapping the tongue? What exactly was the problem they found? Sorry for all the questions but too often I am seeing clinical notes from other practices that just say 'did dental'. Unfortunately there are so few vets who are experienced and knowledgeable about dental disease in guinea pigs.

PS Sorry I am vaque. I am getting this info from my wife. I am not confident with the vet either.

They said the teeth were bad at the rear and very sharp. When the piggy was collected there was a little blood on a newspaper.

Since she had returned from the vet she is much happier and back to her old self. We also have normal poops again, which was the original issue. This issue now is she cant seem to chew anything at all...

i would see one of the recommended vets listed on the vet locator. ideally vets should be exotics or cavy-savvy. yours doesn't sound like either i'm afraid, and i would be concerned that the teeth have been trimmed incorrectly. many many vets are not experienced enough to do this work. coming home without any metacam aswell is worrying, as is pain relief given in water. i really would get to a more specialist vet very soon and see what they think.

Stuff for the water has been described as "to help convalescing"

Will ask for some metacam. Is this normal for piggies to be sore after having their teeth trimmed?

The problem with putting any additives into the water is that you can a) not control the individual intake and b) guinea pigs drink usually less if the water tastes funny. Any piggy savvy vet will recommend to give painkiller by syringe for best effect, so you know exactly when and how much your guinea pig is getting. Ideally, you split the daily dose into two due to the fast metabolism.

I cannot help you with the dental advice, but @furryfriends (TEAS) has been running a sanctuary for dental piggies in conjunction with a vet specialising in dental for several years now, so she really knows what she is about. If you can, please ask your vet the questions that she's been asking you. it will help her to assess the problem you are dealing with.

Hi,

Been back to the vets tonight and seen the usual guy. He's given her a full check over. All her teeth look fine

We have been given a Bio Lapis to help her over the next few days.

She had a pain killing injection which should last a few days. If no improvement will go back on Friday.

Shes eating like a horse and is taking pellet mix no issues from a syringe..

Fingers crossed

Barry

I thought she wasn't able to chew? Has that problem completely resolved now? What was the pain killing injection? Piggies have such a fast metabolism that an injection isn't going to give pain relief for a few days.

All the best! it is great she is eating well. Keep on weighing her daily at the same time in the feeding cycle.

agree with this. metacam is given twice a day after a dental. every twelve hours is recommended because of fast metabolism. even specialist vets are only able to give an injection after a procedure that last 24hrs approx. then it's continued at home at a lower (but still adequate dose) twice per day normally.

the best advice we can give you is to see another vet for the very best treatment. regular vets have such very little training in guinea pigs unfortunately.

Just a quick update - She seems to be pulling around

We are still given her mushed pellets, but she started eating dried pellets as well but only in small numbers. She eating carrot and hay so its moving in the correct direction.

She seems to be her happy self again... Fingers crossed the recovery continues

Hi,

Now at a piggy specialist, but it is still on going. Tests are all coming back negative, but she is going for a few days now as normal

Could I ask if anyone has seen this behaver before? Its the newspaper bit....

Piggy squeeks a bit
Starts lifting vetpet and starts eating newspaper
Poop is a little soft
Within 5 minutes full on diarrhea . Only a few times lasting about 5 minutes and then its stops
Poops return to normal.
Go between 24 and 36 hours and repeat?

Fudge is now on Septrin Paediatric and then Fibreplex about 3 hours later

Thanks

Barry

The newspaper eating I would associate with her wanting fibre maybe? It could also be a pain response though. What are the vet's thoughts?
