Hi I am looking for advice really, my piggy has had a back tooth filed down as there was a spur digging into her cheek also she has an ulcer on her tongue, she is on fibreplex twice a day, emeprid for her tum an loxicom.
i have been feeding her critical care every 2 hours but she isnt really enjoying it or interested in any veggies, I have both flavours and have brought ellas baby food, but she is still loosing weight, does anyone have any ideas what I can give her as she is very weak on her feet now😢

If she isn’t eating at all by herself then she needs 120ml a day of syringe feed to keep her weight up x

What dose of loxicom is she on? Please aim for up to 120 ml in 24 hours, but you can mix the critical care with mushed up pellets or a bit of juiced veg. You can also try grated veg like carrots which you may have to place in her mouth.

When did she have the dental work done? She really should have been eating for herself very soon after. I find most of the guinea pigs, here at TEAS, hate Critical Care, so I use mushed up nuggets for syringe feeding, which go down much better with them. Was it only one tooth that was the problem?

It is important to get food into her, as guinea pigs can go into gut stasis easily if they are not eating. There is a sticky post about how and what to syringe-feed at the top of the page. It's important to keep it up even if she is not particularly keen on it, as it can be the difference between recovering and not recovering. Some pigs are very sensitive to any discomfort and will go off food. You can also use mushed up pellets if she simply doesn't like the critical care and would be better with something more familiar.

Also what dose of loxicom is she on?x
Hi we haven’t been giving her that much perhaps 70ml, she is only 5months old and isnt really a big piggy anyway. I have to give 1ml of loxicom once a day

Is that cat loxicom? How much does she weigh?

70 ml is a survival ration to keep the guts from closing down but not enough to keep the weight.

She had the tooth filed on Monday and she did eat some grated carrot on Tuesday, but gave up, so I took her back to vets on Wednesday, where they gave her an anti inflammatory injection and the other 2 medication. He thinks she might have a virus which perhaps caused an ulcer, which caused her to eat funny, so maybe causing the spur as hes never seen one like this, I am back at the vet Monday

It is cat loxicom, but it is actually called meloxidyl 0.5ml, something must be working though as she had her first poo today, it wasn’t the average poo but it seems that her tum is now starting to work, she is 557g now so is very skinny

I have tried soaking the nuggets, she kind of does the same thing she does with critical care, holds it in her mouth

He might decide to up the dose on Monday.

She also has walked up to the water bottle a couple of times and looked at it as though she wants a drink but then walked away as though she doesnt understand how to drink, but when we syringe her water she drinks it ok.

It sounds to me like there is still a dental issue. Is there any way you could get to Northampton to get your piggy seen by Simon Maddock at Cat and Rabbit Clinic? He sees piggies with dental problems, from all over the UK and the results he gets are amazing. He can do the dental work without the need for anaesthetic, which keeps the costs down and it is far better for the guinea pig too, as they don't need to recover from a GA, and can start eating again very quickly.

My vet did look in her mouth an nothing is inflammed, I think the problem is her ulcer on her tongue.
