Hi All,
Billy has just had a kidney removed as he had stones completely filling the tube between his kidney and the wee pipe (always get urethra and urtera confused!) :( he has just started eating on his own a little and healing ok what i was wondering is do you have any advice for me on diet etc once he is (hopefully!) recovered enough to come home? he is on vet bed anyway but not sure if i need to modify his diet etc. he is weeing well and pooping still so that seems to be a good sign! i will watch for abcesses etc but any other suggestions? thanks :)

Watch for a gurgly gut, smaller poops, weight loss, lethargy and any other thigns that he doesnt normally does.
Plenty of rest and a good nutritious diet is the best medicine, lots of yummy hay and unlimited nuggets.
If he will be on antibiotics a probiotic will be needed.

I have been following a thread on Guinea Lynx, about a vet which is planning on removing a kidney similiar circumstances which lead to be finding another thread. One of the other member's pig had a kidney removed and they said unlike bladder stone operations the pig's recovery was very up and down.

The best you can do is provide plenty of supportive care, and expect some set back's.

I will have a look for the thread but as I'm sure your aware kidney removal is major surgery.

The sow on this thread had her kidney removed. http://www.guinealynx.info/forums/viewtopic.php?t=56173&highlight=tiggy

Gosh that's a major op, all paws crossed that Billy continues to improve and munch away on lots of hay and veggies xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
HUGS FOR YOU TOO XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Poor Billy. Its the ureter (the pipe between the kidney and the the bladder) and the urethra (the pipe from the bladder to the outside world).

Animals, pigs and humans alike can happily and healthily live and function with just one kidney. The only main thing i would say is to keep hydration up as much as possible. Right now you need to concentrate on getting your Billy back to good health and ensure that he is eating, weeing/pooing and gaining weight post surgery. Once recovered then you can start to consider a calcium restricted diet for him.

Good luck and healing vibes for Billy.

x.
