Piggy With Ovarian Cysts

Hi, I'm very sorry about your girl! I haven't read any replies, but one of my girls suffered from a large ovarian cyst on the right hand side, so I have experienced HCG injections/draining.

Pringles had 3 injections which were 10-12 days apart I believe, which cost around £30 each time. Unfortunately they proved in affective and didn't shrink the cyst at all, so unfortunately she had surgery to remove her ovaries (it wasn't a full spay, as she still has her uterus).

However, I have read many success stories about the injections, they just didn't work for me.

Good luck with whatever you decide :D:D

Why is she too old for hormone treatment? I fully understand too old for a spey but the hormone injections dont really have any side effects other than poss reaction at injection site (which my girl hasnt had) which would be the same risk in any age of sow.. Maybe enquire about it? Its not a guaranteed fix, may not work or might only work for 6 months to a year but can have another course when symptoms resurface. My sow just twitched a little when injected, no screams or any signs of increased pain. She was a little quiet that evening but to be fair not anymore quieter than she had been. Its been 48 hours post injection and shes eating better, much brighter and reintroduced her to my other 2 sows and not as much as a simple grumble or even head lifting.. Just friendly bum sniffing. 3 days ago she was trying to actually bite and constantly mounting them. Its helped her already and that was the Gonadotrophin releasing hormone. Xx
Thank you, I am going to try and ask for another vets opinion because this sounds possible! The point may have been giving her injections may have not given her much more time due to her age? I'm not sure but I will look into this x

The aim is to make them more comfortable, shrink the cysts and balance their hormones. I would certainly say ask about them as if they work, and u get up to a year.. A year of a good quality of life is much better than a year of sickness and unhappiness. Its best to get a scan first- if the cysts are large then draining them before the injection is best so she has a clean slate so to speak, and to stop them regrowing. Also its best to see what kind of cysts they are- follicular cysts have a good chance of responding to hormones, whereas serrous cysts have shown to have no effect when given hormones. Again, a scan is painless and has no age restriction as can be done fully concious with a patient vet. I am seeing dramatic results with my sow, i am very pleased. Its sorted out her bad stools, pain and appetite- these cysts have alot to answer for! I must admit i was sceptical with gonadotrophin realeasing hormone (a cattle hormone) and plumped for HCG.. But my vet couldnt get it so she gave my sow gonadotrophin which was less expensive and so far, is working. I'm here for any wuestions u have and hopefully i can help :)

Well its been 5 days since Crunchies first hormone injection, and after a gradual reintroduction with my other 2 sows, they have all been living together properly again! They've been back together for 2 days now and there hasnt been so much as one rumble from Crunchie- she was nipping and mounting CONSTANTLY before her treatment. She is eating better and doing well poop wise. Her weight has gone back up to normal at 1150g and she is maintaining it. She is very relaxed and sleeps with her legs stretched out and even done some popcorning yesterday- she hasnt done this for around 4/5 months. I am over the moon and would urge anyone considering this treatment in older sows to definately give it a second thought, the injection wasnt even painful for my girl, was over in seconds and i saw results in less than 24 hours. Heres some happy faces when they where all rehoused together after 2 hours free range time :) (one happy mummy too!)
