Oh no! Jus when I thought we were getting sorted I noticed that our eldest piggy was not eating as much. Off to our new vets with her and he did a scan that showed she had a very full bladder.
He drained this and has sent her home saying we should giv her batryl.

Now she is home she has lost interest in eating and drinking all together. The vet wasn't much help when we called back.

So it's back to square one, useless vet and sick piggy, I have a sinking feeling I know the end result of this one for the poor piggy.

Is there anything I can do, I'm just about at the end of my teather here, all I want is good care for our ginea pigs.

I am sorry she is poorly. Baytril is very harsh on a piggies delicate stomach so it is best to give a probiotic an hour after. You should be able to buy one from your vet. Please try not to worry as piggies do recover from utis.

From the posts I read there is a better antibiotic I can give her. We have probiotic in our emergency kit at least.

Septrin is better but a lot of vets want to try Baytril first. Could you call them and ask?

My wife has gone back to the vets, she's going to see if they will try septrin. Layla is a very old piggie who we got as she was abandoned when the owners moved house and left her behind. She had several external tumours which were successfully removed over a year ago and she's been fine since. I just don't want to go down the same route with wait and see as we have in the past as I feel her age will be against her if we don't get the treatment right first time.

Well the good news is that the vet gave us the septrin, they did say that it is not licensed for guinea pigs.

Should I still give her a probiotic after an hour or so?

It is not as vital as with Baytril but it won't hurt to give it. Glad you got the Septrin, it is unlicensed but more and more vets are using it.

Do not worry over the unlicensed bit. Unfortunately very little drugs are licensed for piggies but it doesn't mean they are not safe. Septrin has a very good success rate with UTI's. Healing vibes to Layla. Please keep us updated

She didn't fight taking the septrin and has now eaten some hay and piggie nuggets. I do hope she pulls through as I can't face loosing another piggie so soon.

We've had no Heath issues for well over a year, then all this at once, I don't know what's going on.

I'm pleased to say she's doing well so far and has even gained a little weight.

The vet is still concerned that one of her kidneys looks a little swollen on the scan he did on her follow up appointment so we will continue to monitor her closely.

Which Septrin dosage is she on, and how long for? And also did they give her any pain relief such as metacam or loxicom?

Sometimes UTI's can take months to clear and several rounds of antibiotics so don't give up :) get well soon little piggie xx

She's on 0.25ml twice a day. The Vet has suggested 10 days then check progress. Yes she had loxicom too.

She's getting much better now, seems a lot more alert and back to her usual self.
